I'm not a huge fan of the first pic, but at least your learning, and apperently having fun with it. The second picture I like, it's nice and sharp, and you made a good decision going with the b&w. It really makes it look cold.

Thanks for posting the pics, Rachel. It looks like there's a halo around the objects in the images, which usually means you had the sharpening radius set too high. Try using a sharpening amount of 100-150, a radius of .7 to 1.5 and a threshold of 0 to 4. In an image with a lot of detail, you should increase the amount and reduce the radius and threshold. In an image with less detail and larger patches of solid colors, you should reduce the amount and increase the radius and threshold. This is just in general - play with the settings to achieve your desired result.

Also, if I have a pic with a focused object in the foreground and a blurred background, I prefer to select just the area that I want to sharpen and paste it into its own layer before sharpening it. You can then either leave the other layer alone or blur it even more before flattening the image. Happy shooting!

Edit: I just noticed that you said you used PhotoFiltre instead of Photoshop, so I'm not sure how useful my advice will be. Whoopsie!
