Get a job. Wash the car. Don't smoke. Eat your beans. And don't post images in the forums that you have or are about to enter into a challenge until the challenge is over.

Hi Judy, and welcome to DPChallenge.
You will notice that during challenge voting, the entries are anonymous. Many users of the site value this anonymity, as it helps to ensure fair and unbiased voting.
For that reason, we ask that users do not discuss specific challenge entries, or reveal their own entries, until voting is complete.
Once voting has finished and results are posted, you may discuss your entry as much as you like.
Once again welcome, and good luck in the challenge!
-Terry

In all seriousness Ms. Judy, take advantage of all the wonderful information that is available to you. At the top of this page, click on "Learn" and peruse its contents, where you can find all types of wonderful information.
Post questions to these threads, and you will find that folks are very keen on assisting any and all that are striving to enhance their photographic skills.
Don't be afraid to ask questions... that is how we all learn.
Lastly,,,, have fun and try not to get TOO addicted.

You have chosen an excellent place to learn. Stick around, look at pictures, follow some of the threads and you will notice that your skill will progress, maybe even very quickly. You will also notice with time that photos that do well here follow a formula. After voting on a few challenges and seeing how you own images fare, you'll understand what I mean.
Oh... and welcome to the farm. We're all a little loopy.

Welcome Judy! Don't use your on-board flash unless absolutely necessary, tripods are our friends, and lift with your legs - not with your back. :-)

Some comments I see a lot are about background. People seem to frown upon crooked horizon lines, background clutter and things in the background that appear to be growing out of people's heads in people pics. Also focus is a big issue. People like good focus and detail.
About the site, my suggestions would be to read the Learn section for 'tutorials' and 'how'd they do that'. Lots of useful info there. Also, make sure your camera date is set to the correct date and time. Make sure you read the rules carefully and if you have ANY questions, feel free to email any of the site council (myself included). You can find us at the top of the list of members in the Community/Photographer Profiles section. Have fun!! ~Heather~ |

since you´re new to photography then remember that the picture always looks better if you remember to remove the lenscap before shooting ;)
and the other thing.. if you want to win a competition then it really helps if you have a nude woman in the picture.. just look at the most viewed pictures.
the background is important, if it´s in focus it has to look good with horizontal horizon..we don´t like it when the ocean is running out of the picture ;) but if the bacground is out of focus then it helps if all the background has similar neutral colors and isn´t too bright.
if you take closeups of people/animals then the focus MUST be on the eyes.. if not you´re going to get a lot of negative comments ;)
enough for now.. just remember.. photography is for fun, the minute you stop having fun find something else to do :) |

Always remember to revert back to single or multiple shots when you have just used the timer setting on your camera. The times I have turned my camera on to take a photo and find that I have left it on timer...its become a bit of a joke with my family now ....''still on timer?....'' doh!
Anyway welcome to DPC, its addictive and there is no known cure!!

Start looking around you. Photograph things that interest you. Have a look at what others are doing. If you see something interesting, try to do it yourself. When in doubt, ask. Share your images and ask for opinion and do explain your reasons for taking the shot and what you wanted to achieve. Be prepared to accept comments of all shapes and sizes. Learning is about making an attempt so start thinking, reading, shooting & absorbing reactions. Whatever you do, enjoy what you love. |

Here's one more for you. When doing editing, NEVER save over your original shot. Alsways do 'save as' to make a copy of the original and work from that. |
