I seen some really large birds in my field this evening.
They were hanging out with some geese and were about 3 times larger.
So I got in my car and headed into the field.
I thought I was gonna get somewhat close then I got stuck ( a Ford Focus isnt the best "4-wheeler").
But I took a few snap even though still quite a distance away.
I had to crop the images alot to get the birds large enuf in the frame to identify.

My guess is somesort of crane, but I didn't think they were common in Southern Michigan?
I hope they come around again in the daylight and I can get closer for a decent shot.
Maybe Nsbca7 will let me borrow his 600 F/4 ???

Sandhill Cranes. Not uncommon at all where you are.

Sandhill Cranes are a little shy from my experiences with them.

They normally hit the fields just after sunrise and stay until just before sunset before heading off to wherever they're roosting. Nesting normally starts in April so you may see them around for a little while. If it's your own field you may want to set up a blind to get some closer shots. Just be prepared to wait a very long time.

And I'm pretty sure they don't stay in your area the year round. These are migratory birds with very strange migration patterns.

I've taken pictures of them here, in the fall, and in Florida in the Winter.

I think I've been told that the ones we have here in the winter fly north in the spring and the ones that come here in the spring come up from wintering in Florida. Really strange.

I think it's great that some things still elude us. ;-)

I think everything eludes us. We just don't always know it.
