LOL - I want to, just don't have the money right now, or the energy to try to explain it to my parents. (28, and living at home, can be a b*tch and a half)

I'm not in NYC, but about 40 minutes north. It wouldn't be a pain to get to J&R, but Toshiba has a site in Danbury CT, which is about 20 minutes from me (the way I drive) so I'm going to go there first.

Thanks for all the advice, guys.

Ok, ok...I'll let you slide.

I absolutely H-A-T-E Mac preachers. Piss me off, almost to the point of violence. A little too much city agression, on my part...I suppose.

....but I have to admit they're probably right. I will say that Windows S-T-I-N-K-S, always has...always will. We're all caught in their icy, cold grip. It amazing they are still in business having mastered such an inferior program for all these years. I just have so much software tied up in Windows and that's what's been stoping me from making the switch.

One of these days I will triumph over that sinister Bill Gates.

well, you do know the biggest oxymoron out there, don't you? One simple phrase...

Microsoft Works.

Having a 17" screen is not stupid, but a necessity on a DESKTOP REPLACEMENT. I have had no trouble carying it around, I bring it everywhere, weather it be from my bed to my desk to Georgia and Florida, and have had no problems with it being cumbersome or heavy.

as I said " in most cases " with all my cameragear and other stuff I travel with those 2-3kg extra can make a difference, + you need a bigger backpack for a bigger laptop, my backpack fits my cameragear, laptop and spare clothes so I only travel with one backpack and nothing else, and it´s small enoug to fit as a carry on luggage for airplanes. the backpack that fits the 17" laptop and cameragear is cargo only luggage.. wouldn´t want to put my cameragear in the cargo with all those underpaid porters playing with it.. unlocked ;)

To say something is stupid, is well... stupid. In most cases that is.

Actually, Lowepro is putting out a new backpack that holds camera gear and a 17" laptop. I saw the model in B&H and it was just a tad bit larger then my current back pack, plus it has wheels...so I'll be getting that in a month or so. And it'll fit in the overhead compartment of any standard Boeing 747. :)

Man, that sucks. Toshiba's are rated one of the most reliable laptops. Our Satellite has been kicking for 4 years now.

The burner problem may be because of the RAM. It also sounds like a fan is dead.

Good luck getting it fixed. I wouldn't get a loaner though.

The burner problem was happening before I added the RAM, I believe, I don't remember...but the Fan isn't dead...they're running constantly. I can't get them to turn off unless I reboot, and I'm afraid they'll burn out all together.

One of the main problems with burners failing and corrupting discs is trying to burn faster than the machine/software can cope. I had problems burning at 8X and loads of corrupt discs, I thought it was a bad batch of DVDs, then I cut the burner rate by half and haven't had any problems since.

If you are using Nero, then that could be the cause, it doesn't like burning at full whack!

Actually, this is the first time I've ever had JUST a laptop. I had a laptop briefly but I gave it to my sister. Sold the desktop to buy a better laptop because I'm always on until 3:00am, and can't have my desktop in bed with me. (tends to steal the covers) LOL. It's not an issue of desktop/laptop. It's an issue of getting the laptop I have to work properly. :)

I thought that that might be the problem as well, as I am using nero, but I have it do a speed test before each burn, and it was still happening. Then for Sh*ts and giggles, I decided to use the software that the computer came with, Sonic, but after burning 3 discs successfully, it then kept saying that the media I inserted was not blank and that I needed to insert a different disc. I did that 3 times. Had to wait 1/2 hour before it would burn more.

I'm sure it's a faulty burner. Additionally, sometimes the disc will start spinning in the drive and makes a RACKET, and it doesn't stop, even when I hit "eject" on the drive, and I have to reboot.
