I now have an AF 18-35mm Wide angle and an AF 80-200mm f/2.8 (both nikkor) for my D100. I have been playing with the aperture ring on both of the lenses, but I can't seem to get anything to work. How do I use the ring instead of adjusting the f/ on the camera (if it is possible)? Does anyone ever adjust the ring instead of adjusting on the camera?

Why would you want to? (serious question, not being sarcastic)

you have to use the f/ on the camera as it stops down at shutter press
otherwise the camera is in Err state amd will only function in Manual mode
In Err it will not meter ...

I have no idea why you would want to use it, that is why I asked. I just know it is there and I can't take pictures when I adjust it (even in full manual mode; as much as I know to adjust the camera to full manual, anyway)

the net effect on the lens is the same, so there's no benefit, and as ralph says, you then take away the cameras ability to do some minorly important things like metering :)

i would suspect they're for use on cameras without those functions only.
