I was thinking about buying some hoya macro filters for my 50mm, and I was wondering if this was a good idea, some sample shots if possible, I also have a 18-70mm f3.5-4.5G ED-IF AF-S DX Zoom Nikkor, and a Sigma 70-300mm would macro filters for one of these be better.

I've just bought myself a set. I have a 50mm and a 70-210mm in addition to the kit lens.

I was going to get the 52mm but after the advice from another dpc member I went for the 62mm and am happy that I did. At the same time I also bought a 52-62 step-up ring so that I still have the option of using them with the 50mm and a 52-62 macro coupler so that I can reverse mount the 50mm on the front of the 70-210mm.

I will hopefully take a few test images over the weekend :)

Good advice going with the larger size and a step-up ring. Also, if you can, buy a high-quality set that uses a doublet instead of a single element. They are much better color corrected and thus will give noticeably better optical performance.
Extension tubes are another good option, they have the advantage of putting no additional glass in the optical path, but the disadvantage of "light loss" as you move the lens away from the sensor. Still, they are a good way to get macro performance out of non-macro lens.
The 70-300 may very well do good work with either the diopters or extension tubes; with the tubes, the 70-300 may have quite a limited range of focus, however.

I was thinking of gettin a macro filter for my lens, but I can´t seem to find a filter for 77mm threads, does anyone know of a filter that would fit the 17-40L or the 70-200L f2.8, both with 77mm threads, I would prefer a filter from B+W or other high quality and I also like it to be 5X or 10X filter ??

please tell me where I can get one ;)

I got mine from here, and their service was very good (shipped from UK to Switzerland). I'm happy with the quality of the ones I have, if I was really serious about taking top quality macro pics then I would certainly get a dedicated macro lens.

I believe Canon do a close up filter (500D ?) but it's expensive (and only a +2) and I personally think that it's better to but such an investment towards the excellent and inexpensive Tamron 90mm macro.
