Well, according to five-dimensional spacetime using imaginary time, there was no beginning... the Universe just "is" and has been.

I hate to be anti-religious, and I realize that there are things beyond explanation (which require faith, not proof) but a really silly concept is the fundamentalist belief that the universe, the earth, everything started only several thousand years ago. Or that we are not animals. Homo Sapiens are 99.9% similar to the pygmy chimpanzee(and 99% similar to a housecat strangely enough), sure that .1% goes along way- we haave HBO, general tso's chicken and digital watches. Also murder, war, and countless bad things.
But, in the end, you must ask yourself, aren't the goals of homo sapiens and chimpanzees really the same? find some bananas, avoid all calls from tony danza, and enjoy a good smoke with a moderately hairy female of the species?
but seriously, if you think the Adam and Eve story is balls on truth, and not just poetic allegory(which it really is , to explain pride and original sin)- but if you happen to think it really happened- ask your self who is mrs. cain? or mrs. seth?

If you live in a place like Alabama the explanation is really quite simple to see. Adam and Eve could have had daughters that were not mentioned in the bible, or lacking that it is quite possible that Cain bred back to Eve. I mean if you are looking on just that as a point of dissention on the theory of creation then your point is flawed. I could give you many stronger points for and against your argument, but I digress.
Besides I fail to see where the Bible states the earth is only a few thousand years old. That theory is merely an interpretation that certain individuals or religions have derived from the text of the Bible. Many others read it in a very different way.

That's a rather limiting view. How about athletes lined up waiting for the starter's gun? Ground being prepared for a new building? A vintage car being started by the old crank in the front (I hope you know what I mean...) Lots of other things that don't have to have a biblical reference. |
Exactly.. the challenge description was left open-ended.. nothing says that it has to be the beginning of the earth, or humanity or the universe.. :)
Could be the beginning of breakfast.
Or the beginning of the end.
or the beginning of Dukes of Hazard. (Creatively photograph "Those Good Ol' Boys") |

They were monkeys. that is the only explanation. Hence, we were descended from monkeys! It all ties together, very neatly this way.

First-I was kind of knocking fundamentalists, who have indicated that there was no evolution and treat all biblical writings as fact. My "argument" was just brought up lightly, I wasn't looking for "stronger" points.
Second, the part about who is mrs. cain or seth was only brought up because it shows the logical hilarity when strictly relying to text.
but anyway. we are essentially hairless monkeys with opposable thumbs, it would be tough for a lot of the goofballs around here to hold there rebel 300 d otherwise...

I take offence at being classified as a goofball. I am most assuredly an oddball. Nikon users are goofballs.

goofball indeed!
I read on another thread earlier a mumble about choosing Nikon is choosing the dark side, with the comments I've read about Christianity in this thread I'll happily take the dark side option :)

"No Kin"
an obvious mark of lucifer himself. (the angel of light)
Just coincidence that photography has been called "painting with light."

Some people take the bible very 'literally'....which is not the case. As you suggested...the beginning is an allegory. The bible is full of literary forms such as: poems, epics, mock epics, miracles, legends, etc. That's why it's important to understand the literary meaning...because if we misunderstand the form, we misunderstand the meaning.
Just my .02 cents :)

yes colyla:
text interpretation is an extremely important part of what I have done, what I am doing, and what I will do. (even that sounds religious)most of the religious strife, or any strife, legal or political, even, comes from different interpretations of text. Who is the "messiah"- who is a "prophet" whose land is whose, god- the constitution! could there be more fights about textual interpretation than with the bible and/or constitution? I say no!.
So in the begining, there was the word. And we don't knopw what the word was, but we do know it wasn't

and it certainly wasn't

We have people here (everywhere?) who lock their children in closets to pray because they take the Bible so literally. I think they missed the part about Jesus speaking in parables.

I'm new to DPC but I've got to say this thread has kept me in stitches. People are walking by my office wondering what the heck I'm laughing at.
I'm a firm believer in God and firm believer in creation, but this thread has got a lot of great humor in it. I love the Dunkin Doughnut comment (even though I'm Italian). I believe this just shows how creative photographers are. I'm looking forward to being more involved with this forum.
Thanks for all the laughs.
