I've piked up today my Nikon AF Nikkor 70-300mm f4-5.6 D ED.
I love the zoom capabilities, but it takes quite some time to focus... And the noise... Compared to the 18-70 this is a bulldozer.
And it is a bit soft also, I think. Anyway here's a pick at iso800 1/160 from it.

Any thoughts about this lens? Isn't it a bit soft?

It's a touch difficult to tell from that image. Show us a 100% crop, preferably at low ISO and with a tripod, unedited, and people might be able to see enough detail.

This lense has given me fits. I have found it to be soft and slow anytime you don't have great light. When there is plenty of quality light available-it takes some great shots.

Sounds comparable to the Canon 75-300 IS. Suuuuper slow. Except the canon has the potential to be quite sharp as long as there's plenty of light and no movement. |

Did you shot at a high ISO??
The higher you go the more noise I find you'll get. |

I kinda like that buzz-saw sound.
"It's the sound of...... Victory"(see:Apocalypse Now)
I haven't played around with it so much but I do like it. I have taken only about ten different shots with it and only once did I use a tripod.
This was taken with that same zoom for practice, handheld, 80 feet away from subject. Reasonable detail, given the distance and no tripod.
And this was my Lines entry(taken with that same lens), using a $50 tripod that I'd bought 15 minutes prior to taking this photo, so it's the first time I'd ever used a tripod. Probably could have used better dof, which I'm still learning about but it's not a bad shot. IMHO.

Nice image riot.
I'm complaining a bit, but I haven't played with it much. I'm planning in shooting some birds thid weekend to see it's potencials. and I'll use a monopod (SLIK 600 Pro) to go with it.
