Ok, I'm not so sure if it's a hardware or software issue, but here it goes.

My camera allows me to use USB 2.0 (loads of cams nowadays do), and windows keep on showing a little ballon text box:

The label of the CD that came with the camera package says that there is an USB driver, but I just can't get it to work. Does it have anything to do at all with the USB ports itself on my PC? Or is it just a matter of getting a driver installed on my system?

Any1 care to gimme a hand?

You may not have USB 2.0 capability on your computer. How old is it? It's not just about drivers, it's a hardware issue also. I had to add a USB 2.0 hardware device to this machine to upgrade.

I've bought the bit and pieces and the put it all together! It's what I call a Frankenstein (did I spell it right?) I have this PC for and year and a half, +-.

My mother board is an Asus A7S333. If it's a hardware issue, then it should be listed on Asus website right, if i look for my mother board's specs?

Yes, Asus will list the specs for your board on their site. There may also be only some of your USB ports that are 2.0 compliant. Your card reader also mus tbe 2.0 compliant.

That's what I found on their website:

There are only two USB ports available, at the back of my case. I don't use a card reader, it's an USB cable hooked directly to the camera.

Well, I'll just give up on that I guess.

You can buy and add, very inexpensively, a USB 2.0 crad with additional ports mounted to it. That's what i did.

I have a USB2 PCMCIA for the laptop - invaluable, and even runs ProTools quite happily. If you're downloading data counted in Gb, then it's a real time-saver.

some mother boards require that you instal windows service pack 1 to enable USB 2 I think its a blooming liberty myself but please check your windows update and you may need to put SP1 ... You have my sympathy on this issue I used to have to instal SP1 on my old MB .. advanced warning - do not instal service pack 2 unless you want windows and Bill Gates to run your very existance...

I switched to MAC and Ive never been happier.

hope this helps

From the ASUS website:
The A7S333 is ultra-expandable with five standard PCI slots, one AGP 4X slot, two UltraDMA 100/66 IDE interfaces and up to 6 USB 1.1 ports. Optional 6-channel audio with S/PDIF-in/out interface is available for an incredible audio experience right out of the box.

You must have 2 pre-configured. There are headers on the motherboard to support an additional 4. However, the board only supports the 1.1 standard. You can get an add-on PCI board that will add USB 2.0 capabilities for about $20.00 at Compusa, etc. If you aren't scared to opent the case, it is very easy to install. I put one in a computer last weekend - took 5 minutes (not counting reboot time).

My frankenweeny computer has similar issues...i have 4 USB2.0 ports on the back of the box, and 6 more 1.1 if i get teh headers (for the front panel for example).

I have a USB 2.0 card reader. no probs. I get a USB 2.0 portable hard drive...nope. If i plug it in, i get nothing. (errors if i go snooping around deeply enough). If i use my 1.1 USB hub, then i get the windows message to use a USB 2.0 port because it is a USB 2.0 device.(works on 1.1, but SLOW - 7.5 HOURS to back up 22Gb)

What OS are you running? XP needs no drivers.
An add in card, with a 16212 chip (did i get that right?) is the solution i am told, about $10.

I also have probs with my 2.0 card reader and scanner - the scanner has 'interference' in the scans if the card reaser is plugged in when scanning. Interesting, huh?
