Would you consider this a good black and white photo?
Thanks for any response. |

I will give you the first impression. Everything looks the same, the pillars, stairs, building at the end...so no definite focus point, nothing that clearly draws my attention to.. I would assume for this kind of photo, you are trying to lead to the building at the end, but its softer than the path.
What to do ? hmm may be some channel mixer help to distinguish the different parts, a little burning of pillars/stair to attract attention to the final point.

I think qaurawa is right. I looked at you picture and found no central focus point except looking down the porch where the building are very bland making my eyes come back to the stairs and pillars. I put your picture in PS and the Histogram showed a wide range of color but at about same level. Thus nothing grabbing my attention. I think the shot could be a good one. A little more to the left standing next to the wall letting the pillars and stairs be the subject would of been nice. I would like to see the colored version if you don't mind showing it to us.
Good attempt but IMO just off a little to distract.

Tonal qualities are quite nice but if you are asking composition wise, it all depends on the target audience. This might make a good architechual piece in a series but I don't believe it would do well standing on it's own.
In this shot
You pushed the viewer through the trees too the main subject (barn). It is kind of hard not to tell what direction you are steering us.
In this one
I see the perspective (that I believe you were going for) but that is soon over taken by the detail of the many subjects in the shot i.e. Stairs, Columns, Benches, thingy at the end of the corridor and finally the Houses in the back ground. I find my eyes wandering all over the shot and not really pulling a solid feeling from it. Maybe difuse/blur the area at the end of the corridor to keep us under the porch or even go the other direction with an out of focas foreground and push us out the back...???
Just my thoughts...

I am starting to see the point that there is no focal point in the photo and the eyes do tend to roam. I do like the idea of maybe bluring the end to keep the eyes under the walkway.
Thanks for the comments |

Quick and Dirty, maybe something of this nature.
Quick mask at the end of the corridor (should have feathered) - Gaussian Blur = 3
Dup the entire layer - Top Layer = Blur then Gradient Transparency from left to right softening the Stairwell.
You might be able to accomplish similar in camera by using a large Arp and Focusing on the Center Column and then recompose the shot as you have here.

Awpollard, I attempted to duplicate what you have done without much success; I am still on the learning curve with software processing. I think it is the mask thing although I will get there. I do like what you have done, thanks for your example. |
