I just redesigned my website and was wondering if I can get some input. It's a work in progress...each image will be further linked to hi-res versions with descriptions...but I'd like feedback if possible. Thanks

Stephanie,
Your site is too wide. Especially for people who keep their screens on a lower res. My screen is at high res, but I still could not view the whole think without scrolling over. It is also not to user friendly. People need to know that they have to click to enter. It may sound silly, but not everyone knows a hand means there is a button there. Also on your navigation bar the photography section has a roll over menu and all the other sections you have to click. These should all be the same. Even if there is only one section. This will help people navigate better. Also you have too many samples of everything. To display your work you should have only the best of the best. 6-10 photos in each section of the photography menu. Try not to put menus within menus it is too much. ALso 6-10 sample in the other sections also. You are only as good as your weakest piece. You want enough to wet someones appetite for your work to call or contact you. Simple is better with web design! You are off to a good start keep at it. You can view my site at

Stephanie,

on top of Jamie's comments, I'd like to point out the slowness of loading up the thumbnails. It may be your ISP in which case you cannot do anything about it (except for change it), but it may also be something related to the size of these thumbs. Maybe too much of your page gets preloaded which takes the time away from loading visible items.

I hope this makes sense.

my thumbnails are all under 10k, and the entire site loads within 20 seconds for me...maybe it's on your end? I've tested it on 2 computers with great results.

also, the site is designed for a resolution of 975x675. I don't know of anyone (of course I don't know EVERYONE) who still has their screen resolution at 800x600 - so this should not be an issue...

thanks for your comments

Hmm, I'll try again and I'll let you know. (I'm at work, on a 1Gbit/s network, and other sites work fine). I'll try from home as well this evening (CST).

On a screen resolution issue, I'll tend to agree with you. I am in the software business and I have to deal with requirements such as supporting 800x600, but we just have to make it 'usable', i.e. have the ability to have everyting visible by using scrollbars and such.

I am one of those with 800 x 600.
I have broadband so speed is not an issue, but image size does cause me probs.
But I also recognise I am in the minority and accept this.

My PC is 5 years old.. one day it will be replaced, but not yet

OK, there is definitively something going on. I originally browsed your Autumn 2004 collection. When I went to it now, I guess everything was cached in my browser, and everything loaded fast. However, when I went to your Animals collection, it took time to load again. So, make sure that when you are testing, that you clear your cache every time.

Stephanie, your website is very nice. I enjoyed my surfing there very much.
Just one thing I was very much missing: some info about the photos and drawings. A few words of explanation about a certain photo would help a lot.
You did a great job on the design!

Jamie;

Your site is wonderful, as are your pictures, but rather then have my site as a venue to sell my services, it's more of a catalog of my work. I want the most work on there so that if someone wants to buy a piece they're more likely to see something they want. As I said, the site is incomplete, so i dodn't have pricing/purchase information up yet, but I think for my purposes, less is less.

Hmmm...I have my browser set to load new everytime, and not load from the cache.

Jinjit;

the site is a work in progress. I started it last night, and being that my boss is on vacation I was able to work on it throughout the day, but I have a LOT of images to catalog, and haven't had the chance yet to write up information...Rest assured, it's forthcoming, in addition to Hi-Res copies to view.

Strange, I'm on a pretty slow dial-up connection and it loaded pretty quickly for me. Jamie's site, however, took ages to get going.

I really like your work a lot and am most envious of your drawing ability. I wish I could draw.

LOL. thanks. I actually look back on my drawings and cringe, but I appreciate it. :)

Not sure if this has been pointed out before as I haven't read other's feedback :D
When I click on a thumb, the photo appears on the left side of the frame, while right side is blank, nearly 50-60 % ( I think that might depend on your photo size ). This I find odd.

on the subject of user friendly. music on a site is nothing i have ever been fond off. i usually have music playing already on the computer, and whatever the site loads garbles my speakers...

as it says on the main page of the site, it is in progress. I'm currently uploading information on each picture which will be next to each photo, and when you click on the photo, you'll have a higher-res copy. Check out the first 3 pictures under paintings to see what I'm talking about.

in my opinion, menu in menu in menu is better then having to click through 5 different pages to find what you want. This way, you have everything at your mouse click. Especially with the drop-down menu. At least that's what I prefer when I surf a site.

My computer is not set at 800x600, but I do have a favorites folder open on the left side that takes up about 1.5 inches and the site does not fit. So while most people dont have 800x600 they may not have their browers full size. It frustrates me when I can't view a whole site and I assume it does the same for others. You may be lossing out on some great clients because of this. As fas as selling your work, then you are right you need to have a lot of work up. It should be clear that the work is for sale, but maybe you have not gotten that far on your site. What it you put pricing info under your high res images? Just a thought. You are very talented, I hope selling your work goes well for you.
