What do you all think about the EF-S 17-85/4-5.6 IS USM as my main walk around lens? As opposed to the EF 28-135/3.5-5.6 IS USM or Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM AutoFocus (a bit high priced and no IS)?

I'm considering the 17-85 due to the focal range. I like the wider angle of the 17-85 but am unsure if I am losing too much from the f/3.5 to the f/4 minimum. It seems like a small fraction to worry about.

WOW just received my new Canon EOS 20D. Of course the first comment was from my wife .... "What is that and why?"

oh well now I need a theme called "in the dog house" I can take a picture of myself ;)

autumncat, I recently bought my 300D with kit lens...18-55 USM...this seems a nice little lens, but didn't offer me the ranges I wanted.

This is what I ended up with:

300D kit+18-55 USM+battery grip+ 1Gb CF card.

I added:
Canon 28-135 IS
Canon 50mm f1.8
Sigma 135-400 APO
Canon 420EX Speedlite flash+Sto-Fen
spare battery
extra 1Gb CF card
Slik Pro 400DX tripod
UV filters for all lenses
IF remote
On order, remote release cord for 300D
Tamrac Pro 8 bag
USB 2.0 card reader

This lot cost me about £2,000...about $4K

US prices are half UK prices, so allowing for the difference in cost of 300D to 20D...should work out about your budget.

LOL I think I know where youre coming from. Actually I was talking to my wife today about my planning to buy the 350D & was surprised when she said "Only 1000! Go for it!" Man I love her sometimes. (I didn't mention the L glass that was necessary to make it work.)

The 17-85mm is a great lens, but keep in mind that its an EF-S mount which means it is compatible with just the Rebel 300D, 350D and 20D. I was keen on the EF-S 10-22mm as well but didn't buy it for the same reason.

i have a canon 28-135 IS.. i think that this is a very versatile lens and good for almost all types of shots... it also has a macro feature, not as good as aving a macro lens but its better than nothing. Hope this helps. //photography-on-the.net/gallery/lens.php?lens=4&exhibition=7

Rebel 350xt or the 20d??? I read the reviews and still can't decide.

That is a financial question as the 20D is about $400 more expensive then the 350xt, also a preference thing. Some say they find the 350XT too small. Personally I'm looking for a small light camera that I can easily take everywhere with me.

Have you considered the Sigma 500 Super flash. I believe that later versions support E-TTL II. This would give an increase in output power plus a couple of extra options over the 420 at roughly the same price.

I got this Flash: Sigma 500 Super DG Flash...it works like a 550 but costs about the price of a 420...I debated and researched it (between it and canon)...went ahead and got it and it works great. I'm very happy with mine. I got it at bhphoto.com too...

Take some pictures of her to show what it can do, and then tell her how nice she looks in them. Maybe she'll warm up your dogfood, lol.

If you don't mind can you please say more about the Tamron 28-75, I'm certainly attracted to getting one of these as a walk around lens but found it hard to justify as the 50mm is there right in the middle of the range. As you have both I'd be really interested, as you have both, to hear your view on the concern that I have.

Thanks in advance :)

I found a new lens review/rating site/databse. Seems more comprehensive than any other, and rates lenses in a table and with a rating (0-5 scale) that helps in comparing one to another.
Database link

I'm just going to add another, superfluous recommendation, for the 50mm f/1.8. I just bought one, and I'm very impressed.
