Well, I'm going for it. This month there should be a bit of extra cash in the bank to afford the much awaited DSLR.
I am going for the 350D.
I have a good tripod (Manfrotto)
I will get the Sandisk Ultra II 1GB CF card
and definitley the 50 mm 1.8

But, should I forefit the kit lens and go for the EF-S 17-85?
I know it won't fit on all cameras, but there is no chance of that in a while.

I think it will match well with the 70-200 F4 L which will come later.

I want the 17mm otherwise I would look at the 28-135 IS USM.

Any comments would be appreciated.

Thanks Peter.

The EF-S 17-85mm IS lens is a lot better than the kit lens according to many reviews. I wouldn't worry about the EF-S not fitting other non EF-S mount Canons as that format is here to stay.

Don't get the 28-135 as you will not be happy because it's not nearly wide enough. It's really like a 45mm after the 1.6 crop factor.

I think the 18-55 is a decent lens and from what I read it is only an extra $75 or so when added to the kit (might be different now I don't know and I'm too lazy to check in the morning). That's the only way you can get that lens so if you're ever going to want it, just get it in the kit and be done with it.

Hey Kiwi

Put your money into your passion. Put a lazy 2 grand on the Wallabies to beat the All Blacks this year and with the money you win you can get that lens.
Or better still back the Waratahs to win the super 12s and you could have a 70 -200 L IS as a bonus.

Or consider the Sigma 18-125 :)

I have the 28-135IS and the 17-40. Unless you think you will be shooting in lots of low light situations I would choose the 17-40 hands down.

IANACO (I am not a Canon owner) but I would probably go for the 17-40 or the Sigma 17-35/2.8-4 Paying $500+ for a 4-5.6 lens is just a ripoff!
The Sigma is a nice lens.

It has been a tossup with me also ... and I think after reading everything this Sigma 18-125 seems to be a decent walk around lens to fit most occasions and the price is right also.

I would go with the Sigma but that's just my opinion ($269US @ B&H or about $440CND @ Henrys).

That's what I'm going with myself.

18-125 is a great range, but is the quality going to be better or worse than the kit lens.
what I want is a 18-75 f2.8 USM for 450. that would suit me fine. Doesn't have to be L glass, just middle to uppper middle clas quality would be great for starters.

I have to admit that I haven't used the 18-55 kit lens, but the Sigma 18-15 pretty much lives on our 20D and I've been very happy with it.

I have the 18-55USM EF-S lens that was an upgrade to the usual kit lens as part of the offer when I bought the camera. It is not a bad little lens and one I am not prepared to junk or flog off as just a kit lens.

I have decided to go for it and get the 17-85.
I like the range, and have read several reviews where it came out excellent. I have ordered the 50 1.8 for low light. + the 17-85 from B&H.
If I skip on the Kit lens then the 350D is 100 euro cheaper, then with the euro being so strong it is costing me only 350 Euro!! (I took the 100 off that I am saving on buying the body only).
I also ordered the Lexar 1GB 80x CF card. Hope it doesn't take too long to get here. They say 5 - 7 days.

Congrats - I am in the same dilemma you were in. Trying to decide which lens to make my walk around lens.
Hubby is helping me research and he is leaning toward an L lens. Gah - who the heck knows!!
