I have been once again asked for for some of my pictures to be used in a website. And it is the first time that I have been asked how much would I charge. (Previously no one ever offered to buy and I never asked for it myself...while so far my pictures have been used quite a few times at different websites including a recent use of 7 pictures at a commercial website about Gros Morne National Park and none offered any payment).
So, the question is, now that I have actually been asked for charges, how much should I charge per picture (any general idea?) and how should I proceed when someone emails for pictures? I have really poor marketing skills and I always give them away free thinking its just my hobby not career.
Kindly give your input and advice how to deal. Thanks :)

Look at this site:
Stock Photography

Search for something similar to your photo by topic, and see what they're asking. Quick arbitrary search yielded ~$50 for web/multimedia use.

You may want to beat their price, but not by much.

At least it's a start. Maybe someone with actual experience of selling their photo would care to comment?

You really can't go by what comstock says, as comstock has outright purchased photos from photographers and they set their onw prices. You do however have to be aware of what the market is about and you might find it at comstock. The first thing you have to find out is if your photos are so specific to your customer that do other photo will do. If that is the case then you can charge what the market will bare. If they are not specific photos and they can be bought thruy royality free, then you will have to decide if you will accept what they are willing to pay. In the begining that may be a good idea to get work published. By all means make sure you get your name published as the photographer. Do a google search for pricing stock photography, Here is a link for a Stock Photo Price Calculator. //photographersindex.com/stockprice.htm

Good Luck

Looking at the calculators and stock photography rates, I am wondering if $40-50 for 6month or 1 year would be appropriate to ask?

Depends on where they are putting it and how large the photo is. By my calculations, 1/4 page internally for 1 year was $150. But keep in mind this is your first time and it might be better to take $50 for a year that nothing. You have to figure out what your customer has in their budget. Talk to them and see. You may find that if you chagre less they may have more work for you..
