I took this picture while I was lost a few kilometers outside of Budapest after failing to find Statue Park (an outdoor depository of Communist Statues that weren't destroyed following the fall of the Soviet Union).
After seeing the Ansel Adams contest (and actually finding out who he is) I tried my hand at editting this photo (especially in trying to restore detail to the iced-over leaf): Desat, Curves, slight USM, and cloning of white spots in lower left.
Here's the result:
I would appreciate any comments or suggestions for improvement. |

Hi, I hope you enjoyed your stay in Hungary (I was born in Hungary)Isn't Budapest beautiful? :)
Your subject is interesting -iced leaf-,but it isn't really A A style.IMHO |

I had the time of my life in Budapest (I studied there from August to December). Indeed, Budapest is a beautiful city. And the women... nagyon szep!
Anyway, about the picture: I haven't seen nor studied nearly enough of AA's work to emulate it. It just gave me the idea of working in black and white and using high contrast combinations of black, white, and grey for effect. Compared with the original photo, I'm surprised how simply working with curves brought out the detail in the leaf beneath the ice, given how washed out it was in the original.
I have almost 2000 pictures from Eastern Europe. Hopefully with practice like this and help from these forums I'll be able to have great photographs as well as memorable pictures. |

You did a good job. The picture's sort of ho-hum... If it were heavily cropped, it would woirk better, assuming you have sifficient resolution in the native image to do this...

Perhaps something like this...
I went back to color to make it more apparent that the leaf actually was white beneath the ice.
You were right about a tighter crop making the picture more interesting. Thanks |

Köszönöm szepan! (Be warned though, my entire Hungarian vocabulary has been exhausted. I only took classes for four months--just enough to operate in a restaraunt, but not much else :) ). |

I couldn't think of much else I could do with this photo, so I tried GIMP's automatic color adjusters (Layer -> Color -> Auto) and what do you know? One of them actually did something useful! In this case, Color Enhance really made that little difference that makes me think editting is finished. Of course, I could be wrong. Anyway, here's the latest draft:
