out of two boxes my grandfather lent me of his film SLR equipment, I have recently come across what I initially thought were lens filters but to my surprise, are actually magnifying filters (for lack of a better term). They donĂ¢€™t actually fit any of my lenses, all I have done so far is hold them in front of things like this .

Question is...if I have a lens that allows me to take a macro at .28m, with the added magnifying filter thang, will I have to stand back to take a macro or will I now be allowed to take even closer macros?

thanks in advanced

max, just shoot like mad and see what happens!!! try all the combinations, etc. it's not like you have to pay for processing...

They sound like diopter filters. They let you focus closer. You can move in closer with them.

yesyes of course! However, I am curious if its worth the $$ to by a step-down ring to use the rings regularly

so for focusing, if i am standing 28cm from the flower then throw on one of these filters, the flower will still be in focus?

No, almost definitely not. You'll have to move in closer or re-focus.

I dont think my question is asking what I want it to but I will try again.

Will adding one of these rings give me more range of focus in the direction of the subject?

If I understand them properly. Each camera (lens) has a minimum focusing length -- it isn't possible to focus any closer than that minimum. Put one of these on and you're able to move closer and still focus.

Could be wrong -- it's happened once or twice. ;)

I've just bought a set of close-up filters (were delivered yesterday), I can now use my 70-210 (min focus distance 46 inches) as a macro lens with the subject being just a few inches away (will do tests and measurements this weekend).

Max, get a stepping ring and enjoy them (don't forget that you can stack them - putting the highest rated closest to the lens) :)

link about this kinda thing

edit: added link

Here's a tutorial: Intro. to Close-up Photography

Diopters, or, more correctly, close up lenses, are about half way down the page.

They allow you to get closer. That's it. If you could focus to, say, 6 inches without one, you could go to, say, 3 inches with one. They come in various powers.

No problem, the the application of transposition of formulea, complex astral physics and quantum theorum we end up with this:

lens + closeup filter = lens that can focus closer than before :)
