quick question--i'm getting certified this week and plan on taking a dive trip (don't know where yet!) in august. i'm having the hardest time trying to decide whether or not to just get the housing for my G2 (which costs as much as the camera) and risk it leaking, or just spending the money on an underwater camera. anyone have one that they love or one that they suggest? also--potential dive spot recommendations would be cool, too! I'ts hard to narrow it down!
thanks,
alecia

Doesn't the really expensive housing come with any kind of guarantee? If the product works, and they're confident enough in it, I'd think they'd back at least most of the price of your camera. If not, I'd be leery of the product anyway and go for cheapo disposables.

Which housing have you found, Alecia? Is it that giant one with the handle?

Sadly no. The most common cause of an underwater camera/housing flooding is "malassembly" - usually a hair across the o-ring. AFAIK no manufacturer will cover this.
Cheapo disposables will only work down to a certain depth. They are usually rated to 4m. They stop working at about 12 (the pressure crushes the mechanism so either you can't wind on or the shutter jams open).
Don't know much about the G2 but I'd go with a housing.Digideep has a lot of info on what's possible. Don't forget to budget for lights!

I am by no means an expert on diving; I've only been snorkeling 3 times. BUT, some of the prettiest water I've ever seen is off the coast of Honduras on a little island called Rotoan or Roatoan or Roatoan (something like that). If you remember the series "Fantasy Island," this is the island where it was filmed. It is awesome. The trip down can be expensive, but once you get there, if you choose to stay on the island, prices range from a couple of dollars a night for a hammock to up to around 50 for air conditioning and hot water. At least that was the prices a couple of years ago. It is truly a relatively unknown tropical paradise.

Get a macro lens. Go to Sulawesi. It's the best I've seen!

Thanks, Jonniboy -- that's one of the best links I've seen in a while. It's certainly the best I've seen for underwater digital photography. I'll add it to the site's links section as soon as I stop being so lazy.

Its odd that this came up now, because Ive started thinking along these lines myself. As I dont have any underwater ability I cant put my best fear idea to work. Good luck on the diving and show us the pictures when you get back.

Is this the kind of thing you fear? :))

Do you mean the Ikelite? I used an Ikelite housing with a film camera and really liked it. People say they look cheap and flimsy but I never had a problem. I like the way you can see if you've flooded it!

Hey guys, thanks for the responses--I had to go to class last night so couldn''t get back sooner---I talked to the instructor briefly after class about this and he said absolutely do NOT buy the housing--it isn''t worth it--he has lost several cameras this way. (He teaches an underwater photography class (yay!) as another certification, so I will talk more about cameras with him at tomorrow''s class.) He did show me a digital underwater camera (don''t know anything about it yet) that runs about 5 or 6 hunge--still cheaper than the housing for the G2--that has extra lenses (macro, telephoto, etc.) and light attachments. I will definitely look more into this one tomorrow and keep you posted.

Drew--I know which one you are talking about (it is huge!) but no, this is the one I was looking at. It looks nice and seems easy enough to handle, but it costs as much as the camera, and if it leaked, i''d be screwed.

Jonniboy--thanks for the tip about sulawesi , that looks unreal! But we only have a little over a week for this trip and I just dont want to spend so much time getting there--but that will definitely go into the "potentials" for the big trip in March!

Karmat--thanks also for the idea of fantasy island. this also looks beautiful--and close--I swear I read it was only 10 minutes from Miami?? I will look more into this and probably some place like the Caymans--I have heard they are beautiful, too.
