After handling the Rebel XT I've decided to go for it. Now I'm interested in getting a wide angle lens. My choices are as follows:

Canon 10-22mm
Sigma 12-24mm
Sigma 15-30
Price not a concern.

This lens will be added to my current selection of Tamron 28-75, Canon 50 1.8, and Canon 70-200 f4. I thought about the Canon 17-40, but I don't think it is wide enough for the landscape photography I want to shoot.

Thanks

If price is not a concern then how about the Canon 16-35 2.8L? It's better then any of the three you listed below. However, between those three I would say either the 15-30 or 10-22. I don't have any personal use with any of these but I have done some research on them. Visit here to see where I'm getting a lot of my data.

Price is not a concern for the lenses listed. I thought about getting the 17-40 in the place of the 28-75, but then I would have a gap between 40 and 70. Ideally the picture would look like this:

10-22, 12-24, or 15-30
28-75 walk around
50 for low light
70-200 tele

Have not seen a review as yet but a new lens by Tamron might be a cosideration also:

If you ask me, stay away from the Sigma 12-24. I read a good review recently that compared the Canon 10-22 and the Sigma 12-24. The results showed that Canon was far superior than the Sigma. If I find the link, I'll update the post.

That gap will not kill you. It is not like you have to have every focal length. You more then likely will find 2 or 3 focal lengths that you really like and use most of the time no matter how many lenses you have. Two of those may be on one lens if you are using zooms. I have a pretty nice collection of lenses with no set budget and I don't have anything between 20 and 70mm. Besides if you were to get the 50mm that would fill the gap nicely.

I've seen a review comparing the Sigma and the Canon (most probably the same one). In that review, the Canon is clearly the winner. I do have to say, however, that the Sigma 12-24 I've got is nowhere near as poor as the one used in the test, in fact I seem to use it more than any other lens at the moment. The reason I went with the Sigma rather than the Canon is that I didn't want an EF-S lens, because I intend to win the lottery and buy a couple of 1D Mk IIs.

The Canon 10-22 mm is designed for the camera you are planning to obtain. I think it is the best tool for the wide-angle view you want, w/ your camera. I recommend the lens, having used it only two months on a rebel. A very sharp lens, w/flawless focus system, it is so often maligned because it is not compatible to larger sensor canon cameras, but you have to decide on that issue.

I've been looking at wide angle lenses recently too and my list of possibles looks much the same. My instinct tells me to go as wide as possible (so I don't end up buying again in a year). So the 10mm lenses appeal to me. That Sigma 10-20mm is interesting but doesn't seem to be available anywhere yet. And the Sigma 12-24mm doesn't seem to have a front filter ring unless you use the screw-in adapter. Anyone able to tell me how much of an issue this really is?

A screw-in filter adapter may cause a problem, especially at the widest settings. On the Canon 10-22 for example vignette will occur unless a low profile filter is used.
