A question for the more experinced ones woth this kind of lenses and photos.

I'm waitting for the nikon 70-300mm ED G to arrive, but I'm affraid it will be short at full tele (although it will be 450mm in the D70). I'm plannig in shooting nature (mostly birds) and sports. I know there's not the moust fast lens in the world but it was the only decent one that fitted my budget.

But if I need more zoom what shold I get? The prices for lenses above 300mm shoots up in a way... That I can't reach the best ones. So I was wondering:

1º) Sigma APO 170-500mm F5-6.3 aspherical RF

And it reaches 1000 euros! A bit more in usd.

any thoughts about it or other suggestions?

don't the teleconverter alter the image, like vignetting and so? Are they good?

And about prime lenses for long distances, like 600mm?

Here's one I would consider (Sigma 50-500 f4.-f6.3), runs just shy of $1,000 at the more reputable online dealers.

Here's a link

I'm looking to get a teleconverter myself, for me I'm not going to be doing too much telephoto stuff so the portability and cost advantages of a teleconverter make sense. I just need to decide if to get a nice quality Nikon TC-200 (which I can get very cheap) and lose all the auto functions of the lens, or wait a while to get a Tamron.

If you have a way of possibly saving up for one my advice is to stick with the good primes. I have tried the other route with the long zooms and relying on tele-coverters and I will tell you the difference will amaze you. If you are serious about your bird images or are thinking about going pro find a way to come up with the money for a good prime.

If you are planning on shooting birds, you might want to visit George Lepp's web sites. Here is a google search with some of his links, //www.google.com/search?sourceid=navclient&ie=UTF-8&rls=GGLD,GGLD:2003-45,GGLD:en&q=george+lepp George sells an attachment for on camera strobes that will reach out a doog distance to add fill. This may allow you to use a slower lens. Be sure to look at several pages of the google search on George. Here are 2 links on birds //www.birdsasart.com/bn157.htm //home.earthlink.net/~richditch/tutorial.htm Here is the link for the Progect-a-flash. //leppphoto.com/Project-A-Flash/

PS, don't tell them you use a Nikon. lol just kidding. There is a lot to leard from George Lepp.

I've used this lens quite a bit and decided not to acquire it. While the optical quality is reasonable considering the price, autofocus tends to hunt like crazy and the zoom drops quickly and suddenly out when pointed downward. It's also not the fastest lens. This and the fact that I'd anticipate the focus to go soft at wider and longer lengths would suggest that a 2x converter is not at all desirable in this combination.

I'd say the same of the 50-500. Had the same problems.
