True enough... although if it weren't for the upsampling and color blotchiness issues, it probably would have ribboned regardless.

I recognized the subject straight away but wasn't sure if it was a copy or the original, ergo my sarcastic "looks familiar..." comment.
Were those ALL the comments and who trolled it, in the voting?
I'd be interested to see who voted it low. Funny thing is,I might have voted it down for being a straight copy, showing no originality.
Ah'mma nut that way!
Well done.

I emailed DPC on March 8 concerning the "Adobe" picture. I compared the challenge picture to a picture in my Ansel Adams book. I compared all parts of the picture; shadows, doors and even the gravel in the courtyard and they were the same in both pictures. I rcvd a reply from Drew that stated "Shhhh". I knew then that something was up so I Shhhed. I think it would have helped in all the voting if more of the Zone System AA used to create his pictures was explained in a tutorial. It divides the range of light into eleven tones, or zones from total black (zone zero) to pure white (zone ten). With this, you can determine and then create specific tones in a final print based on an assesment of the contrast range of a subject.
I think Bear had a good idea for the challenge. Maybe if he would have photographed a copy of the picture instead of scanner copy it would have finished higher. Some ppl caught the scanner lines. |

The Zone System was explored in detail in several threads, as were other elements of Ansel's work. It was a very educational challenge.

This cracks me up. I thought this shot was the best in the challenge and everything else sort of, well, sucked :) I was really disappointed that the shot didn't make it to the top 3 and couldn't find it anywhere, but now we know.

BTW, the site has changed a lot since the photo was taken
if i am correct, this is the place, the church at the Taos Pueblo -- note the Christmas trees and 2 additional crosses :) So even if you wanted to take an Ansel like photo, with a 8x10 large format Digital Camera, you really couldn't anymore :)
This thread cracks me up.... I was expecting entries like the Snake River such as this (in BW that is) but instead we just get a bunch of badly converted B&W photos.
