If this isn't educational fair use according to US Copyright law, I don't know what is. There really should be no problem posting a small image/the entry here. There is no attempt to profit from the image, nor does it in any way diminish the future commercial value, which I think are the main criteria needed for a use to constitute infringement.

That was fun! I didn't catch it in my voting. That's great that it was put in there, and that it placed so well :) At least the voters agreed that it had the qualities of an AA print :)

Can we see the vote breakdown?

Very fun idea indeed.
What I would like to know is how many 1's and 2's this photo got...
I mean, do the low voters recognize quality?

There were a total of 2 DQ's requested. We PM'ed both requestors to explain what was going on.

We could maybe modify the challenge description to include a link to this thread.

I actually thought that somebody had gone there and shot a copy! I'm so gullible... :)

me too! i didn't vote much in this challenge (didn't get anywhere near the required 20%), but i did see the thumbnail for this and think (wow, that one looks promising).. but i think i forget to ever get around to looking at it (and i haven't seen the original enough that i would've necessarily picked up on it).

Low down and sneaky. Nice to see so many people actually recognised it too.

Let's not do this too often, though.

It was one of my favorite shots and definitely would have scored it higher had it not been for the pixelization and the lines that almost looked like it was scanned from an half-tone image.

Fooled 'em with the non-landscape, we did...

Great fun and very interesting. I'm relieved to see Ansel did well. It was unfortunately not a great reproduction (had to sample up in size), so it woudl no doubt have done better if taken from a "real" print.

LOL shoulda used one of his florals.... that would have really thrown a wrench in it

Or a color shot!

Given that this wasn't one of Ansel's stereotypical landscapes, the high placement ought to dispel the myth that the voters don't know what they're doing. A better scan might have ribboned.

Very interesting comments on the photo. I've been carefully studying AA's work for the past several months to see how his skies look in terms of grain and noise--and found that he does indeed have grain and whatnot in his heavens. It helped me relax a bit on demanding perfect clarity in my own photos. Fun idea guys!

Agreed. The version at the National Archives is a much better scan and most certainly have scored higher and could have ribboned. Now whether or not it could have beaten that FANTASTIC cactus shot is another story. LOL ;) ;)

Regarding grain... Personally, I think electronic noise does very little to improve an image and should be eliminated whenever possible.

So that's what took the challenge results so long to refresh... :-)

Very clever!

It was one of the handful of entrys that really looked Anselish to me, and I scored it a 10. Overall, I was quite disappointed in the predominance of garishly high-contrast images. Why many people perceive that to be Adams' style is a mystery to me. Continuous tonality and maximum dof, along with perfect focus and exposure are the qualities I looked for.

I could not bring myself to enter this challenge for several reasons - primarily my own lack of an image that could do Adams justice. It seems to me that DPCers have quite a ways to go in their understanding of what made him tick.

If it were that easy, then he never would have made a name for himself doing it.

Could this thread have sparked the idea in Robert's head? ;)

Actually, there was another thread, I can't put my finger on it, where someone else broached the idea of entering an Ansel in the challenge. In that thread I "volunteered" to create a dummy account if Drew and Langdon allowed it and use it to enter an Ansel. Subsequently they contacted me and said they'd enter it from their side, and asked for my help in selecting one.

Assuming an AA shot OUGHT to have won this challenge is akin to assuming that Ansel himself could not have continued to grow, find new subjects to shoot and create new and better art were he to have lived even longer.

It's almost like when Charlie Chaplin entered a Charlie Chaplin look alike contest and lost... Except maybe his face was a little grainy. :-)
