Well I'm wondering about lighting! been bouncing my 420EX and these are the once I like the most. I like the shadows, but I wouldn't say they'r perfect. Do you have any ideas on how to improve them even more using just that light source? When shooting kids at their home reflectors are pretty hard to use, have you tried that softening thing you put on the flash? And in what direction do you like to bounce it?

Any kind of diffusing would work, even if it's just tissue over the flash. However, saying that, I really love your work here, I think just a little more processing would do them wonders. They seem too flat, especially in the skin tones, and a little more levels/contrast work would really boost that. The eyes could use more light, but that's a matter of either getting an assistant to help with reflectors, or diffusing the flash and getting it more into the eyes, or using some kind of secondary off-camera diffused flash as well. (You can also do some dodging, but that tends to be noticeable.. I do it in a pinch though).

Just my two cents worth.. I'm sure others can offer much better advice.

I think your photos look great here. The lighting is soft and looks natural. I wonder if a bit of contrast, curves or levels tweaking would enhance them. I normally bounce my flash similar to these and also often use the 80/20 bouncer from Lumiquest. Recently I've been doing everything I can to use window light; increased ISO and using a tripod are the two main methods for this as well as working on holding the camera really still. :)

Which lense did you use for these shots?

Hey, these are great! I especially like #1 and #3. The lighting in #1 is best. The expression in #3 is perfect. Keep it up!

thank you! I'm pretty pleased with these but you are right about the eyes! I need to work on that since even in these pic's I used the dodge tool and they are still this dark! I'm going to work on them a bit adding some contrast and maybe brightening the eyes a bit more!

I used a 28-135IS USM lense here

Thanks again for the comments, they were very helpfull!

I love the lighting. The photos came out great, I did a similar set recvently, and the only thing that I think could improve the images is a little more of a catch light in the eyes. This can be achieved by using a reflector on the flash, but still bouncing oc the celing or something. I haven't tried it yet, but will try it soon. I only have an old Pentax flash gun I use on my Sony, but it seems to work OK. I will try attavhing a piece of white card to the top of the flash with a rubber band to reflect the light into the eyes.
