I am going up to Montreal next weekend and will have some time during the day to do some shooting. Can anyone recommend where to go. Any landmarks that are a "must see". parks where there might be things going on? Marketplaces with lots of people. Hope it's not too cold!
thanks.

Hey Nick,

Montreal is a beautiful place, unfortunatly, its very slow and messy during Winter. I would definatly recommend the 'Old part' of montreal, called "Vieux Montreal'. Its near the St-Laurent river (Metro "champs de Mars"; "Place d'armes").

I'm not sure if you want to dare going up the Mont Royal hill we got in the middle of our city, but its definatly a nice view.

Parc Lafontaine, situated at the corner of Amherst Street and Sherbrooke Street is beautiful, and the whole lake has skaters and hockey players on most of the time.

The Jacques Cartier Bridge is also a thing of beauty, with its brand new green paint job and its 30degree angle (something not often seen on bridges like this). Its situated at the corner of Papineau and St-Catherine. To go "ON" it, you need to pass by Sherbrooke Street going east, until you hit Papineau street, heading south.

For people, St-Catherine Streen (east-West) or St-Denis Street (NOrth-South) are nice streets with full of people if sunny.

Of course there is also the Olympic Stadium, which is hard to miss, situated at Metro "Pie-IX" (Pie 9) and/or "Viau". I believe you can even take the elevators and go all the way up, which offers a beautiful panoramic view of the city.

Hope this help some... Ask around, people are really nice :D

Cheers,

I Think Antoine has given you a pretty good run down of where to go - it depends of course on what type of shots you want - the east end of st catherine is filled with scungy sex stores and all sorts of punker youth / interesting characters - but it might take a bit of guts to pull out your camera and point it at some of those individuals.

Montreal is such a compact city, if it's not too cold, the best idea is probably just to grab a map, a couple of metro tickets (SPeaking of which some of the metro stations themselves provide really cool photo ops), and just go for a walk - I'd recommend starting at the bottom of st laurent or st denis and just walking up, the interesting stuff continues for ages. Mile end, for example, is a really funky neighbourhood. If it was summer I would also recommend walking around mcgill campus, there's some cool old architecture there, but some of it might appear a little drab in winter.

I'll be going back there in the middle of the year, and I can't wait.

You may wish to look at this link, Montreal - Sightseeing. it mentions the places alluded to by Antoine and a few others I believe.

Hope this helps a bit.

and Montreal is full of Kamikazee (sp?) pedestrians that are very colorful on St Catherines. Its my favorite place to people watch. Old Montreal with its sandstone buildings is gorgeous. You can also drive 45 minutes north of town into the Laurentian Mountains to take pictures.

Hey Nick! Shoot in the Metro (subway), go to "Foufounes électriques" and corner of St-Catherine and St-Laurent for the counter-culture artists.
The Olympic Stadium might be a last chance for any tourists since the city is considering demolishing it... It wasn't so great tought unique, and really expensive... But we had the chance to host such a covered event as the Olympic Games... Who can forget Nadia Commanecci? and... (?)

thanks for all the great tips, looks like I can put together a couple of pretty full days of shooting. can't wait to see the city. and I definitely want to see that bridge - a 30-degree anngle is pretty extreme.
