Not a programmer, but a Computer Graphics major, and I now do Web Sites (albeit freelance). I have the aptitude though not the desire to do the programming end of it.

You get to work with equipment you would otherwise not come in contact with or couldn't afford on you own, learn processes you would have otherwise avoided, but that may come in very handy later in your career, and most importantly allow you to make professional contacts that will last a lifetime. You get to pick the brains of people who have taken the hard knocks and have been to where you would like to go.
If you have the time and the resources I can think of no better way, other then aprenticing, to break in to the professional world of photography and do it right. |
I think this is right.
I asume a good portfolio is the most important part when trying to find a job as a photographer and shcool can´t teach you everything.
You can go to work everyday and spend most nights and weekends for 5 or 10 or 100 years building a portfolio but you can also go to shcool wich then is your job and spend most of your time there for 1 or 2 or 3 years and get more experience and learn more techniques in shorter time.

with a degree CompSci and a MSc in Engineering which pays the bills
for schools -- depends on commitment
shortterm Photography Night courses are a good bet (thats what i'm doing)
longer term i'd say RIT would be my choice
(if my wife would let me go back to school ;)
of the 4 night courses i've taken - only one has been a waste of time
& I see my skills grow after each
