I just got my D100 and am having a hard time figuring out all the focusing settings. The focusing area used to be the top square (top square dark black and the rest fine lines) and I was messing with some settings and now it is the middle square. What setting do I change to change the focusing area between the squares?

There's a rocker button beside the LCD on the right -- the one you use to switch between menus... use it to select a focus area. I usually keep the lock switch turned on (also beside the LCD) so I don't accidentally switch focus modes. |

PS -- Unless I'm reading this wrong, for most situations, you're really going to want that center square to be chosen for the focus area. Otherwise, your camera is going to be trying to focus on things in the top portion of your frame, rather than in the middle, where your subject is more likely to be. |

AWESOME!!! I had no idea that is how I changed it, I thought I did something in the menu. Thanks a ton (I feel like an idiot now) And yes, I do want to keep it in the middle, but I just needed to know how I did it. (This camera is pretty different from my canon 300d)

I did the same thing when I first got mine... I couldn't figure out how it kept changing without me realizing it! Like I said, I generally keep it locked; otherwise I'll keep bumping it accidentally. |
