Any input as to the quality of this image (processing) would be welcomed. Good or bad and would rather the negative as I need to improve.

The image looks a little dark and flat on my monitor. I hope that you dont mind but I had a little tweak (i'm no expert)
switch off all but Red channel as adjust curves for slight "s" shape.
repeat process for green channel but invert "s" curve.
Switch all channels back on and adjust levels.
I find that this improves separation and gives a bit more sparkle to the tones.

This is a great "Candid" shot of kids playing. Their lips appear a little reddish. Actually I like to take photos a little underexposed and then edit them later. This one is slightly underexposed and needs just some color adjustments. Also I am not sure of the balance of the composition. Do you have Photoshop?, and do you shoot in Auto or Custom mode? |

I also find your improvements looks better. I am using elements for processing and am coming to the conclusion I will need to purchase PS.
Although the $299 price tag is somewhat steep.
I am going to attempt a few more tweeks and see what happens. Thanks for input. I now have to go to son's baseball try outs. I will try posting another improvement later. |

A nice candid moment. I wish the boy on the far left were framed into the photo a little more. It looks like a nice location to make a note of for future shoots too.
I agree that the tonality needs a little something. I like fibonacci's lightening, but it seems a little too contrasty to me. I played a little too, but still don't feel it's there yet.

I took a shot at it. Let me know what you think...

Here's my attempt. I played with the levels a bit, as I found your original a little dark and flat, so upped the contrast a tad and the brightness, while maintaining the colors. Then, because the sharpness seems a little too intense, I duplicated a layer, applied a small gaussian blur to layer 1, and just used normal blend mode to tone the sharpness level down. Then I just went and desaturated the color a bit to my liking, but that's a completely optional step. Some people like more saturation, others not so much.

First Attempt
Second attempt
I would like to think there is a little improvement
Your opinions are still welocmed
FYI: The two boys are my 4yr old twins. This shot was taken accross the street from my house, they just love playing here. |

I think you have gone a little too contrasty,
my attempt at a quicky, duplicate layer, screen/bit of dodging and burning.
All down to personal taste.

I agree mine comes across as to light.
I cannot get the dark colors (the shirt and pink flowers in the background) to remain while attempting to adjust the original underexposed shot. |

Just try the duplicate layer in screen blend, play about with the opacity slider til you have it where you like, flatten, then dodge and burn the bits you aren't happy with. The detail is there, it is a decent exposure.

I like the original best too. It just has a rich feel to it.
Here are a couple different takes on the shot. I wouldn't say they are better either, just a twist.
To hang on the wall, I would probably go with a B/W version or sepia.
