You could also wear a thousand dollar bill around your neck and a big neon light that say's "Nail Me". The kind people of The South Bronx would certainly welcome you with open arms.

I'm born and raised in NYC and the only touristy thing I do with visitors outside of full day walks, The 55 Bar and museums is The Circle Line boat tour. It's a nice way to see the whole city and get cool facts about all the Boroughs, all in one shot. Not too expensive either.

...I'm pretty sure Sweet Georgia Brown owes me money.

Re:Hotels- Stay away from The Penn Plaza and The New Yorker both are sleazy, sticky low rent zoo's.

well, it looks like this is the time for first timers to visit the big apple. i'm going to a friend's wedding on the jersey shore june 17, and then taking a week to explore nyc afterwards. never been there, should be fun. but of course very overwhelming. it's hard to see as much as possible since i don't know where to begin.

any advise on where to stay? is it better (or more importantly cheaper) to stay and jersey and commute in for a week, or try to stay in the heart of the city? i'm hoping to not spend over $150 per night on a room, so if that sound's like an impossibility in manhattan, then please let me know.

i haven't traveled in years, so any advice on the best way to get cheap hotel tickets would be appreciated as well. should be a good time.

Hey Jen, definatly a joke...There are bad neighborhoods in every city. Manhattan is completely different, you will love it. Other area's besides Manhattan are Downtown Brooklyn, Coney Island, and dont forget Staten Island, it offers many oppertunities to take photos of NYC suburban life, old vintage style churches live there, some of the best, and even Historic Richmond town, which is a complete town straight out of the 1700's .
