Getting close to ordering my equipment and want to start off on the right foot. I would like to have one walk around lens that I will use for everyday shooting. My subjects will consist of my 2 and 4 year olds, group family pictures of about 20-30 people, and landscapes. The three options I'm considering are:

Tamron 28-75 2.8
Canon 17-40 4L
Tamron 16-35

What do you think???

Other lenses I'm getting are the Canon 50mm 1.8 and the 70-200 4L.

Thanks in advance.

I'm actually thinking of get the Tamron 28-75 2.8 AND the Canon 17-40 4L. Also waiting for reviews on the Sigma 10-20mm super wide.

I have the Tamron 28-75 2.8 and I love it. It's the best lens in my bag. The others that I have: Canon 50 1.8 (love this too, just don't use it nearly as much now that I have the Tamron) and also the Canon 75-300 IS and the 18-55 "Kit" lens.

The 75-300 is a lot of fun. And the 18-55 helps me get the "big picture" when the Tamron just isn't wide enough.

The lenses that still tempt me are: The new Canon 10-22 and maybe someday a good 100mm macro lens.

But for an all around "keep it on the camera" lens, the Tamron has not left me wanting.

I'd say if you do more landscape and large group pics, then Tamron 17-35. If you intend to do more portrait/pic of kids, then Tamron 28-75. Both get good reviews. Check out Popular photography's website's reviews of both of them. Bob atkins website has also tested both. I think the 28-75 tested better, relatively, compared to the 17-35.
