I can't figure out the best way to deal with this little problem:
Whilst in Las Vegas recently, I took a bunch of photos (surprise, surprise!) - 1724 mb to be exact.
I want to send them to friends and relatives overseas. Not all of them have DVD players/drives, so CDs would be best.
In their full glory, 1724 mb would need 3 CDs each - too much.
I don't really want to resize them, in case they find something terribly interesting that they would like to zoom in and study in detail, or perhaps they'd like a decent sized print of one.
What about compression? Can I get 1724 mb down to 700 without too much loss?
If so, is there some way of doing that as a batch?
Thank you in advance for your help. |

Perhaps send them each one CD with images suitably sized.
Special requests for specific images with better resolution could then be provided when needed. |

//www.jpegcruncher.com does an excellent job of batch-processing and seriously compressing images. What size are the original images, in terms of kb or Mb? And what format? Tiff, RAW, JPG?
I'd send a heavily-crunched version out with a note saying if you need a better print than you can get let me know which image and I'll send a larger file. The results after crunch are very respectable unless you go larger than 5x7 on my typical "fine" jpg file. 8x10 would look good to most people.

Why not use save to web feature in PS?
Put them on a CD and offer to send specific ones when requested?

Put them up on //www.smugmug.com in their full size glory, and let people choose the size they want to see.

zip the files with windows zip utility
rar the files with winrar
ace the files with winace
the party has to download demo versions to unzip in order reverse order they were zipped

Thanks for your advice, everyone.
Re smugmug: both sets of grandparents AND my best friend all suffer from internet phobia. My only hope is a CD in their hand and even that seems to scare them a little. Therefore zips are out, too :-(
I already have all my pics on a website that no one ever looks at - yet they swear they WANT to see more photos !!! *sigh*
Robert, I'll download the trial and check it out, thank you.
I think you guys are right - I should just resize them all. All my darling "plebs" probably won't even notice the difference.
Again, thank you.

Another option would be to use the Adobe Photoshop automation tool and create a web gallery. You can specify the final output size and quality and after it's all done, the images will be in a folder called images (in the directory you specified for the output).
I use this for my web gallery shots and in the last bunch, I specified the output at 640 pixels at #11 quality and each ended up being around 150K (down from 2240x1680 at 2.5MB)
For images on a CD, 800x600 around 11 in the quality setting would yield a very nice image.
Pretty good overall and painless as it will sit there and run unattended while you go off and do whatever.
OK - just tested it at 800x600 and the images are very clear at setting #12 (highest) and average around 450-500K per image.
(If you use it, dump all the rest of the sub-folders and files in the directory after it's done)

Brad, the web gallery would work if they looked at it only on the computer.
However, I want to leave their options open, so the photos can also be viewed on a DVD player via TV, which works with jpegs (and a decent player).
I guess I should try out just how much difference (if any) the pixel size makes when viewed on a TV. |

No it wouldn't.
All the finished images end up in a folder called images. They are only jpeg images in there, and can all be copied out and burned on a CD.
What were the original image dimensions and are you looking to make an executable type autoplay CD?

My images are mostly 3504 x 2336 pixels, somewhere between 3 and 8 mb.
I just tried something - here is what I learned from it:
I made a webgallery in PS and burned it onto CD. One of our DVD players doesn't recognize it (never does), but the other one did.
It immediately started playing the images (which I set to a max 800 pixels), then went onto the thumbnails.
Therefore, if I were to burn only the image folders of each web gallery onto CD, I'd have the convenience of the batch processing, the small size, AND something that is essentially an auto playing slideshow that can be viewed on TV and computer.
Sounds pretty perfect, don't you think?
Soup, I must agree with Robert (bear music) - they really don't look all that bad. Plenty good enough to sit around with some folks and have a slide show evening.
Only problem is that some look a bit darker than they appear on my monitors (yes, I have two of them). Not sure if I can be bothered checking and adjusting each photo. |
