I was wondering how you will be voting on the Ansel Adams Challenge. What will you be looking for.

I expect to see a lot of images using the dodge & burn technique. It may be the first time for some entrants. If it's done subtly, it can be a plus. But over use will not get a high vote from me.

I will be looking for B&W landscapes:) Also, quite a bit of contrast.
And, of course, if there is a shot that is a copy of one of his and well composed, I owuld consider that a plus (not exactly the same, just similar.)

probably anyone like me who didnt do a landscape.... will be marked down.... I wish teh voters did know Ansel adams better... so that they woudl vote all pics fairly

| If I find time to vote, I'll be quite lenient and reward the effort more generously than I usually do even if the result is not exactly breath-taking. Adams' technique is obviously -at least to me- not something that can be mastered overnight. Personally, taking a halfway decent picture (I tried wide-angle landscape) using the zone system and then spending a lot of time on meticulously processing it the "Ansel way" -only to end up with a mess- have proven to be a very frustrating and demoralizing experience. In the end, I'm not participating but congratualtions in advance to all the participants. |

I will vote for good effort, I know how difficult it is to get anywhere near. It has took me all night to get to where I deem it fit to enter.

He did do some colour photography. Read about it in this article: //www.photo.net/bboard/q-and-a-fetch-msg?msg_id=006PtE Just the same I wouldn't chance it for this challenge. In the meantime I won't vote colour images down for be simply that. I'll look for other elements that he used in his work to give a fair assessment.

The shot I took simply doesn't look as good in B&W as it does in color.
I wouldn't go portrait in this one because that's not what he's predominantly known for. That's a good way to get skinned. IMHO. |

Since the dallenge is to do a shot "in the style of this great B/W photographer", I will be looking for B/W images. I suppsoe it is possible I could score very highly a color image that seems to capture the soul of AA's work, but there are not likely to be many of those I don't think.
Beyond that, I'll be looking for:
1. A rich, complete, dramatic tonal range.
2. Critical sharpness throughout the image.
3. Swwep of composition, stron elements leading the eye into and through the image.
What I will NOT be looking for is landscapes per se. Ansel wasn't limited to landscapes, and neither should we be. Contextualization is important, however. The best Adams images always have a since of place, of location, of reality. It's inlikely that a "studio" shot will be able to reach that level, regardless of how snillfully lit and composed and "printed" it is.
