Maybe someone here can help me out. I have a Nikon D70 and a 512Mb CF card. When I switch the camera to take RAW (not RAW+JPEG) photos, it tells me I can fit 47 exposures on the card.
This doesn't make sense. Even the larges RAW file measures about 6Mb. 47 x 6 = 282Mb. Where'd the rest of the memory go? Is the camera allowing for much larger files?
This isn't just my camera either, my friend's D70 does the same thing.
I look forward to an enlightening answer :) |

i'll hassard a guess that it is calculating a 'not compressed' raw
which is roughly 10meg (D100 says 51 for 512 card )

The RAW size estimation on the D70 is spectacularly pessimistic - you'll fit a whole lot more than that onto your card.

Yes, just to test - I put it on to RAW + JPEG and took 81 shots (after it told me I could only take 42). Obviously the calculation is bung. |

Have you actually shot all 47 frames? Perhaps after the 47th frame, the D70 will realize there is enough space on the CF card for more exposures.
I've had this experience with my Nikon Coolpix 4500. When I thought my card was filled, I looked at the display and noticed I had two more exposures available. |

This is one of those things that Nikon needs to change.
On my 512 mb card, I can store about 80-85 RAW pictures.
On p. 45 of the D70 instruction manual, this is mentioned.
Even the JPEG capacity is underestimated. I can hold about 195 pictures at the highest quality JPEG setting.
Do other brand cameras do this? |

Yes, they all do - although Nikon does seem to be extra cautious with their RAW files.
It's understandable really; image sizes will be highly variable depending on how well they compress and the last thing the camera manufacturers want to do is to overstate the images they can save.

Methinks Nikon is letting conservatism get the better of them in this case. In both JPG and RAW modes, the file size can vary depending on the subject matter and the amount of noise. For example, my 10D RAW files run from 5.0 to 6.7 MB
I suppose Nikon just assumed worst possible case. It prolly does recalculate on the fly, so the "estimate" should get a bit better as you fill the card.
My Canon underestimates as well but to a lesser degree.

My 1GB card in the D70 tells me it can fit 94 files.
This weekend I shot 126 and it still said there was room for another 41 photos. Last weekend I filled it with 180+ photos before it was full.
Use it as a minimum guide only.

My 2GB card tells me 189, but I have had 225 on the card and it still has room. |

I believe that not only the capacity on the card makes a difference, but also the subject. For instance, an exposure of a white wall will require much less processing than a close-up of a knotted tree branch. i.e. the tree branch would take up more memory on the CF card than the white wall. I may be mistaken. It would be an interesting test.
