Hello all....I'm thinking of buying a Nikkor 85mm 1.8 lens from someone. It's a 1999 lens. Has anything changed significantly in the past 6 years? The seller reports a few "specs" on the glass, but fine. I'm asking him what that means (specs), but any advice would be appreciated. This is for a D70.

Be shy. Specs can be anything from paint to scratches to fungus. A few can be any number from 2 to 22. If you want to buy glass, will anything less then perfect satisfy you?

Thanks. I'm inclined to agree.

Another question....does anyone know if there's a picture quality difference between the 50mm 1.8 and the 85mm 1.8? The price is very different. Is the extra zoom (not much) really the only factor contributing to hundreds of dollars more?

Thanks

The 50mm is produced in larger numbers, because of a cost advantage it can be sold pretty cheap. The 85 also uses bigger and fatter lens elements = more expensive.

The seller says...
"There are some specs of dust inside 2nd top element the lens, no scratches. I don't think there is any difference between this and the new 85mm."

Is this dust expensive to clean out?

You prolly would not want to bother. If it's truly just a few specks, it will not affect image quality at all.

It's hard to get cleaned. Most places that clean lenses end up getting dust and contaminents back in before they finish. With a small lens like that it may cost anywhere between $50 and $80.
