Is it legal to make a collage from non identifiable/generic magazine photos and take a photo of it as a challenge entry?

My guess is that the collage as such would be regarded as a work of art (of your making). I doubt it would be legal on its own, but if you placed a separate item on or in front of it, then it would probably be acceptable.

In the rules:

Artwork: Literal photographic representations of existing works of art (including your own) are not considered acceptable submissions, however creative depictions or interpretations are permissible. This includes, but is not limited to paintings, sculptures, photographs, drawings, computer artwork, computer monitors, and televisions. A literal representation is one which is composed in such a way as to compel the voter to rate only the work of art represented and not the artistic decisions made by the photographer (e.g., lighting, composition, background elements, etc).

IMO, yes.

From past discussions, the 'work of art' just can not be the only thing in the frame. If it is three dimensional, the particular lighting you choose to shoot under is enough to make it an 'interpretation -- if two dimensional, don't fill the frame with it.
