Just got my 1D MK II today. Can't figure out how to open RAW files in Adobe RAW Utility. I called Canon and they told me to use their cruddy software or call Adobe. Adobe will just tell me to call Canon. Anyone know how to get Photoshop CS to recognise these files?

What?

I had trouble opening raw file one time and drnick told me to change from 16 bit to 8 bit and then it worked fine

What version of the Adobe utility do you have? I see there's a beta that added support for the 1Ds here, but I don't know if that helps you.

That would be great if I wanted to work in 8 bit. That's not an option.

I'll go to Adobe and see if they have a version raw plug-in for the 1D MK II. Bastards at Canon suck.

Cool. So which do I need the DNG Coverter and Camera Raw Update 2.4 or just the Camera Raw Update 2.4?

just camera RAW update would do if you are not planning to convert the files to DNG format.
edit: not my day for typing!

OK. Now I'm feeling really stupid. What is DNG format.

And one more question. Is there any way to get these RAW files to show up on my MAC as thumbs the way RAw files from the 1Ds do. It's a PIA trying to figure which file to open when they all look like sheets of paper.

DNG is Adobe's attempt in trying to create a global RAW format (like PDF)
I can't answer the other part as I am not using MAC.
But I did see something for windows that you can install to view thumbnails of RAW files (which I don't use)

If you have PS CS it should just be able to open the RAW files I thought. The file format is the same as the 20D, namely a .CR@ file, and it opens up the 20D stuff fine. Hmmm, ok, maybe I have forgotten and downloaded an update or something at some point.

By the way, if you are looking at doing a lot of RAW processing I would strongly suggest you look into Capture One. The latest version supports the 1D MkII and it leaves the Adobe processing for dead.

As for viewing the thunms ... I am not sure you can, but I would be very interested in doing so if anyone knows a way :)

No. The version I have won't open them. I installed the plug-in. It works. Thanks. Oh, and I'm a quick study. To view the thumbs I will just take the images in RAW + S JPG at lowest res setting. They come up right next to each other in my files and shouldn't slow the camera too much. Again thanks to you all for helping with this.

Back to the new toy.

Adobe releases regular updates to its Camera RAW plugin, make sure you have the latest one which is currently version 2.4. Version 2.2 & 2.3 opened the 1D II RAW files.
