My wife and I went to the beach for a picnic last night and just as the sun was setting a couple of whales came by. She has the 20D and so got much better photos then I did. The sun was getting pretty low so the light was pretty poor at this time.

BTW the photo of the mongoose was taken at 1/30 of a second using a 300mm FL, she has a pretty steady hand.

Amazing... one of the photos looks so much like the one I took in January. (only your hand was steadier than mine)

Looks like a nice shot of the flukes, too. Sounds like a great way to end a picnic!

I'm guessing by your location in Hawaii that it's a Humpback whale.

I've been going whalewatching for the past few weeks and haven't been catching any good shots of the migrating Pacific Gray Whales here, but I have gotten a few spectacular shots of the local dolphins. Flickr Gallery.

Yup it is Hawaii, the Big Island. The park is very close to home and we try to have a picnic there at least once a week.

I love you photos of the dolphins. I get pretty close to the local dolphins when I am out on my canoe but no way am I taking my camera. What kind you have have there? ours are spinner dolphins, pretty small but a lot of fun.

Oh and, yes that is a Humpback whale, they come pretty close into shore.

Thanks for looking!

We get mostly Common Dolphins (both short-beaked and long-beaked as their range overlaps in Southern California) and lately a lot of Bottlenose Dolphins, which are very large. I've heard of other boats also seeing Pacific White-Sided Dolphins, which are small like the Spinners.

I'm going on a trip on the 12th that goes all the way around Catalina Island and I'm hoping to catch some good shots of whales (we see Pacific Gray Whales there, and there've been recent sightings of Orcas and Blue Whales), dolphins and sea birds. I'm also hoping to see a Risso's dolphin, which have wonderful white/gray scarring.

I've been to the Big Island before, which I think is wonderful (the Kona coast) and even got to do some snorkeling.

I've taken my camera out on the kayak before, but that's when we go out in the protected bays, I'm not sure I'd do that in the ocean. Maybe you should pick up a silly disposable waterproof one just in case you see something spectacular. I'm going to get one before my next kayak trip too.
