What does everyone think is a "good" size wide angle lens. I have a 28-300mm lens and I use the Canon 10D (digital) camera. I have a chance to purchase a 18-55mm lens. Is that a good mm for wide angle when using digital? What is the largest mm I should look for? (12mm, 14mm, etc). Thanks,

Jen

"good' is a very subjective term. Good for what? What will you use it for?

If it's the "kit lens" from a 20D or 300D, it won't fit on your 10D.

Jen, I use to be concerned with a wide angle problem with digital cameras, but then I realized that Canon's program for photo stitch works wonders for wide angle. And you don;t even need a tripod for good results. Great for landscapes. It is a good idea to have a wide angle lens also, but it depends on what you are going to shoot. a 15mm times 1.6 factor is a 24mm. Canon makes a 10mm-22mm which would be a 16mm-35mm //consumer.usa.canon.com/ir/controller?act=ModelDetailAct&fcategoryid=148&modelid=10510

I highly recommend the 17-40mm f/4L, if you have the cash or need an extra stop take a look at the 16-35mm f/2.8L.

I've used the Sigma 12-24mm in the past and it's a well-built lens. Not quite up to par with the Canon 17-40 but useful if you require a wider lens. If you are on a budget, the Sigma 15-30mm and 17-35mm are supposed to be pretty decent.

Remember, ONLY EF lenses will work on a Canon 10D. (EF-S lenses only work with the 20D and Digital Rebel)

Don't forget that this lens is an EF-S unit as well and will currently only fit a 300D or 20D.

I've got the Sigma 12-24, which I rather like and many people love the Canon 17-40L.

This EF-S Lens will not fit the 10D. EF-S mounts are only for the Digital Rebel and 20D.

Try looking at 3rd party lenses from Tamron or Sigma. They make very good lenses and the prices are reasonable.

This Tamron Lens is really nice. I've read pretty good reviews on it.

This link has some reviews of the Canon EF-S 10-22mm.

The Canon EF-S 10-22mm is a nice sharp lens, and would be a logical choice for a Rebel, 20D or the new 350D. I think it is over priced. If you can accomodate for the high cost of 600 to 700 $US, it is an ideal lens. I have been using it for about a month and like the angle of view a lot.

Sigma has also announced a 10-20mm lens that is an EF mount and as such will work on the 10D
