if i am correct, grey market cameras don't have a warranty....i would think that it would be a much better idea to buy a camera that comes with a warranty - if something happens to it you'll want to be able to send it in and get it fixed for free.

How much money can you afford to spend? The camera is only the beginning. You may be better off to either wait for your DSLR or go with a pro-sumer model. |

Leon, if the pennies are tight I'd suggest you leave the dSLR's off your list for now. Buying a dSLR is one thing but you need lenses and several of them. Youv'e got a decent cam so why not try to become the first ribbon winner of a Fujifilm FinePix S20 owner?

Last I looked, the difference in price between grey market and authorized is not that great.
The good news is, the Digital Rebel has dropped in price since the 350 XT was announced. It can currently be had for $749.95 with the kit lens (select Adorama under "more buying choices").

While many grey market items are just fine, I do not suggest getting camera bodies. There are too many problems that can be warrenty related in DSLR cameras. Repairs on a DSLR start at $500 on most models. If you have a defective sensor, bad LCD screen, or backfocus issue in your camera you have just obtained a very, very expensive paperweight.

FWIW, B&H warrantees grey market items for one year. If something oes wrong, you ship it to B&H as opposed to the manufacturer. I don't see any grey market camera bodies at B&H though, only lenses and other stuff.

Ummmm, would you feel confident opening up your camera and replacing the sensor? I damn sure wouldn't. I also doubt that Canon would just sell you the sensor anyway unless you are an authorized repair center.

The rebel is pretty much the far cheap end of the DSLR market, anything that'll be cheaper than that will really not be worth owning at all as a dslr - you may as well spend the same money on a good digital consumer semi-slr, when you consider the extra money you'll be putting into buying canon-fit lenses and the relative quality you'll be getting out of it because of your cheap camera.
In my experience second hand lenses of an even remotely reasonable quality end up costing more than the rebel goes for nowadays, so if you cannot even afford a rebel it seems to me you would not be able to reap the main advantages of owning a dslr - that is, the ability to change your lens to fit every occasion.

The difference between repairing a PS2 and a Canon DSLR is as wide as the Atlantic. Hell, the trained techs at Canon can't even figure them out.

Onecall.com has the Digital Rebel (body only) for $650. If that's too expensive, I'd get a Canon Powershot G6 from zipzoomfly.com for $519 shipped. |

I don't see a problem with you just buying a rebel used. You could probably find one for 600 that might still have a warranty.

Have you considered looking for a used DSLR? You might be able to find some good deals on ebay. Just a thought.

I have a full insurance policy on my Rebel and lenses that costs me all of $30 per year, with no deductible. It covers everything from manu defects to me dropping it. It certainly reduces the value of a warranty. |

That site has a lifetime customer satisfaction rating of 0.71 (on a scale of 1-10)... slightly above a North Korean street vendor. |
