I am a brand new member. I am watching the scores roll in on my first 2 entries. (5.0 and 5.8 so far) It is all very exciting! I am completely enjoying myself. I voted for all the photos in both contests, but I have begun to realize that I am rating photos consistantly higher than most other voters. It won't skew the results or anything because, as I said, my voting is consistant and I voted for all photos, but I think that from here on out, I will be a little more critical. It's just that I am new to photography and I am so amazed at some of what I am seeing here. This website is amazing and oh so much fun.

Hi Sherry, sounds like your on a high :) Voting here can cover many forms as I'm sure you will learn, all I can say is vote as you want to, but (as you are doing) be consistent. I've been here just over a year and still vote with my heart more than my critical eye.

I tend to vote higher than the votes I receive...but that's ok... I figure that I know what I'm looking at, and I know how to vote on it... nobody else can tell me how to vote :)
keep having fun, and remember, when you see my photo, give it a 10! :)

Sherry,
Welcome to DPC!
Judging by your profile, it looks like you're here to learn and it looks like you have the right attitude for it... you should have a lot of fun.
Since we vote on a 1-10 scale, one would expect the average's voter's average vote to be somewhere around 5.5. With that said, individual tastes and styles vary, and with them so do our votes.
Generally speaking, so long as you are voting fairly and honestly, it really doesn't much matter where your average vote falls. Especially if your average vote cast is in the 4-7 range, you probably don't have anything to worry about. The only downside of a high average is, it doesn't give you much room to distinguish the good from the really good.

Not to worry... I've rated images HIGHER and HIGHER the longer I've been here and have come to believe that, in general, voters consistently rate images low.

I have to agree with this.... I find that the longer I hang around here, the more open minded I try to be, and thus, rate images higher.

IMO, there's no such thing as rating photos too high. ;-) I've seen lots of members, many of whom have been around a long time, who vote about as high as you do. As long as you're being consistent, I say just follow your natural instincts and vote however you like. Welcome to the site!
