I'm in the market for a DSLR and since I have an investment in Nikkor lenses I have been thinking the D70 might be a good choice. It is larger than I would like (I have gotten used to my Sony point and shoot digital) but it is much lighter than my old FA with autowinder. I have been reading all the reviews on the websites and the D70 still looks like it might work (except for the size). However, I was in Best Buy last night and took a quick look at their demo. I was surprised at how dark the viewfinder was. I then picked up the EOS 20D which was sitting next to it. Its viewfinder was also dark, though not as dark as the D70. A little while later I was in Circuit City and quickly looked at the EOS DSLR they had on display. It had a nice bright viewfinder. Is this a known issue? Does this have anything to do with the D70 and 20D not having a battery inserted (don't see why this would be). Is it just brighter in Circuit City than Best Buy? I do a lot of indoor photography and would like to be able to focus in manual mode (especially since my Nikkor lenses are AIs and will have to be used in manual mode.

I've only had mine for a month or so, and only have a Sharp p&s to compare to, but I have absolutely no complaints in this area. No real complaints about the camera at all, to tell the truth. I love it.

I thought the same thing when I first looked at the D70, don't worry it becomes perfectly bright and clear when you put a battery in.

It needs a battery. Most of the demos at Best Buy/ Circut City don't tend to work well. :)

Thanks, I guess the lens stops down all the way without the battery? I am having a problem explaining why this would happen otherwise.

i had the same problem and finally sent the camera back.

they returned it to me saying that i had to take the lens cap off.

stupid know-it-alls.

The viewfinder brightness will be directly related to maximum aperture of the lens that is installed on the camera. Most display models probably have the kit lens, which has a maximum aperture of f/3.5, I think. If you put on a 50/1.4 lens, the viewfinder will be quite a bit brighter.
The viewfinder also will appear smaller than in a film SLR, because of the smaller sensor.
