Hi friends,
My Nikon 5700 camera was working perfectly till a few days ago when I last shot some pictures. Three days when I switched on the camera it comes on but the top display immediately switches to EV+- 2.0 setting. Pressing the shutter at this point does not take a picture.
If I switch on the menu I can take a picture while the menu is on. When the menu is off the command dial, the function button, or the EV setting button on the top all just change the EV value only and I cannot take a picture.
I contacted the Nikon̢۪s Service centre in London and they could not help me with it... (They said thay have not heard of a problem like this). On a different forum I met another guy (in UK) who has the same problem and he also did not get any help from Nikon on this.
The only recommendation they had was that I take the battery and the card out for 24 hrs which should reset the camera to the factory default settings. This did not work for me. Actually it did not set the camera back to the factory default settings.
Apart from this I have tried combination of buttons while switching on and even re-upgraded the firmware... to no hapiness.
I am wondering how can this be fixed as I love this camera.
Please do write your suggestions. I will be very thankful to you for any help in getting this fixed.
Many thanks and Regards,

When yoiu turn the camera on, and hold down the mode button on the top behind the shutter button, and rotate the command dial, what happens?

Hi Robt,
Yes, I tried using that button also and still the same... All it does it allows changing the EV settings.

I dont have one of those cameras or know anything about the but the first thing i would try which you probably already did is take all the battereis out the camera for a good 24 hours to kinda reset the cameras internal memory sometimes that works, jus a suggestion.

Well, asit, I didn't expect it to FIX anything, I was asking for diagnostic input. So, once more, when you hold down the "mode" button and rotate the command dial, exactly what happens in the LCD screen? What changes?

Hi Robt,
Ok I'll try to explain myself better... When the camera switches on the display turns to EV mode. What you see on the display is EV+- 0.0
At this point the shutter locks. Also when I turn the command dial with mode button pressed the EV value changes to + or - (Depending on dial direction). If I press the EV button and turn the command dial, the same thing happens. Just turning the command dial also does the same.
The buttons for manual settings on the left side of the camera also do not do anything. While I press them (with or without command dial rotation) nothing happens. The only other button that works is the menu button. Once in menu mode I can switch to manual / auto / AV / TV mode and shoot pictures... while the menu is on.
regards,
Avi |

My 5400 (v similar) has a RESET command in the menus. The once or twice that it's locked up hitting that solves everything. Can you even get into the menus from where you are?

Right, that's what I'd suggest; based on what I'm hearing here, try going to menu and resetting the whole damned thing to defaults. I had something similar to this happen to me, and a reset solved the problem.

Guys,
Yes, I can reset from the menu. But the reset from the menu only resets the user settings. This is more than that.
Thanks anyway.

I don't have the 5700, but have some familiarity with other Nikon digicams. It sure sounds like what is happening is this... the camera thinks that something has bee pressed that invokes the EV setting mode. Perhpas a switch is being forced closed, or there is a short circuit or component failure somewhere that has the same effect.
It definitely needs to be serviced. Nikon should be able to sort out the problem.

Asit, My 5700 has just failed on me. It's a different problem and Nikon Tech is aware of it. The only way I can take a picture is to manually turn off the flash. In any mode were the flash wants to fire it will not unless ~ I have specifically defeated that capability. The tech knew of the problem as soon as I mentioned it & it must be returned to Nikon for the fix. If you send it in for repair you may want to ask if that problem with the flash can be avoided with some preventative maintenance or upgrade. By the way I like the capabilities of the camera as long as the subject of the picture is stationary... I've found a limited capability in a panning environment.

Asit,
My 5700 is doing the exact same thing. I was out last night doing sunset pic's when I turned it on and the same thing you described happened. Did you ever get it fixed and how?
Thank You
