This is my first, more or less, successful moonshot with my 20D. I had my Sigma 70-200 zoom plus sigma 1.4 tele-extender. Even though I had been using a sturdy (Gitzo Studex) tripod I always had some movement. I bought a cheapy $20 release from Ebay and it really seemed to help.

If you can give me some pointers on getting it better yet please do.
Thank you all.
Dick
Edit: forgot thumb. DUH!

Ok you fixed it. I like the shot. I don't see anything you can do differently. I think you have done an excellent job.

Sounds like you got the same release as me.... $20.00 plus $4.00 shipping. Mine works great, but only used it for about 6 photos. I'd love to see your astro photos...thinking of trying some myself if the clouds ever move out of Texas.

I took this one between clouds here. Many attempts were blocked by dirty atmosphere.

Thanks for the compliment. It just makes me want to get closer.

If you get closer that would be awesome.

Thanks Owen, I've had quite a time getting one this clean. Also a whole lot to learn again with the new camera.

Has been really cloudy, actually foggy, here in the last few days.
Took this one a month ago, will try again when possible.

the shot looks good, but to get it even better you need to take about 10 to 20 shots and combine them together to get more detail to stand out. Or you need MORE focal length and still stack them

try this free program many people use to stack and combine the images, its fairl easy to use, but sometimes it wont stack them right, just try it again and use the manual alignment option

Registax

you should be able to get something like this (with more focal length that is)

Peter and James,

Your moon shots are both fantastic. I now appreciate the patience it takes to be successful. I feel the need for a longer lens.
Thanks for the input.

Great shots. I'll just note that if you are looking for crater detail, I don't think you'll get it with a full moon. You'll only see the crater detail adjacent to the dark side of the moon.

Now that is interesting, and very helpful. Thank you!

yes you get a lot more depth detail when the moon is NOT full, 1/2 or 1/4 moon results in some good detail

1/2 moon

Thanks for the point about that program James. I've dl'ed it and will try it soon, it looks good and intuitive to use.

Very nice 1/2 moon you gave link to.
What are you shooting through?

Gauti, that 1/2 moon shot was shot with my D60 through my old Meade LX-90 telescope, it has a focal length of 2000mm. My new telescope is only 1180mm or something like that.
