thanks everyone !!! I have really been wanting to get lightning with the skyline in it as well, so there is another task to mark completed on my list of things to accomplish in my life :)

it averages all the light in the scene -
There is a page in the manual that describes the different metering modes the 300d uses. page 84 in the US manual

Brazil is the country which has the biggest lightning activity in the entire world, and I can't seem to get a hold of them! It's just A.M.A.Z.I.N.G.
