I finally got a step down ring for a bunch of old filters sitting in the sttic. I began cleaning them with a lens cleaning kit and slowly realized that it had little effect. Upon a closer inspection, it looks like it might be mold (is that even possible?).
Question is, can filters hold up better to chemicals than lenses? any suggested cleaners?

What type of filters? It is possible since some filters are made of layers of glass.

Yes, mold (fungus) is definitiely possible. As Clara posted, some filters are layered, and the fungus may be in between the layers. If so, it wll of course be impossible to remove.
It may also be on the surface, and if it has been there a while, it has probably damaged the surface of the filter. Again, the outlook is dim.
As an aside, when folks sell older lenses you'll often see "no fungus" in the description. It's a pretty common problem with old optics if they are stored in poor conditions. An attic will usually qualify as "por conditions."

i can feel the bumbs when I run my finger over it. Does that mean the glass has actually been raised, or is the mold on the surface as well?

Mold's on the surface. there was prolly an organic coating that the mold consumed... *burrrp*

If not taken care of lenses can also get moldy.

The 82a is not a layered filter, but what has happened its the fungus has etched the coating of the filter's element. Most good filters are coated as are most good lens elements. Hope you weren't storing any descent lenses up there.

its weird because almost everything else was fine. it had been up there for years (almost 16 years I would imagine). Of all the lenses stored up there, only one has some mold, but its on the edge of the inside of the glass and barely noticable.
