Apple annouced new iPod Photo models yesterday at a much lower cost. A 30Gb version is now $350, and an Apple adapter will be released in March for direct downloads from camera to iPod (now why didn't they do that in the FIRST place?!). Anyhooo... here's a hot tip for anyone interested:
Buy.com has the newly discontinued 40Gb models for $339 with free shipping, and those include a dock, carrying case, Firewire cable and AV cable (all optional on the new models). The same gizmo would have cost you $499 two days ago. I just ordered mine. ;-)

my problem with the ipod photo is the lack of a card slot.
the cable just doesn't cut it -- now your entire camera is going to be tied up why d/l'ing photos instead of just a card?
not to mention, you're probably draining the battery on both the cam and the ipod during the transfer.

A card slot would be nice, but I look at it as an iPod (music player, organizer, data storage...) that happens to have some cool features for photography, rather than a dedicated media storage device that does little else. I'll use it to clear large flash memory cards at the end of a shooting day, so tying up the camera isn't a big deal, and batteries are rechargeable. Transferring images from camera to iPod isn't ideal, but the ease of playback, simple organization and automatic synchronization with the computer ROCK. |

I like the screen size and built-in slot of the Epson, but it's twice the size of an iPod and doesn't include Firewire, an AV cable or headphones, nor does it sync with your computer- files must be moved around manually. Bleah. |

Ok, let's see if I get it.
If i travel I don't necessarily have to carry around a laptop, but i can download the pics to the iPod? Using the usb cable that came with the camera?

Hi Guys
There is currently a media reader for the iPod from Belkin - overcomes the issues already raised...

Correct, as long as you have Apple's Camera Connector adapter ($29, due at the end of March). Belkin makes several similar adapters, but the original one is pretty slow. |

Scuds.. that is correct..
2 options - one the Belkin media reader.. or
using the
Currently the camera will not connect directly to the iPod to download files - you need the device in the middle ($65US).
The iPod Photo - has a color screen to let you view the images - but you need to have connected to a computer (Mac or PC) to have organised them. The iPod photo will let you output to a TV - nice for viewing with friends... |

To download the pics from the camera?
Easy one! even if i can't see them after downloading!?

There are too many different media cards - if apple were to add several card slots the iPod Photo would start to get ugly. You could use a USB card reader for your card. (I think there's a USB slot?)
I use a USB card reader to transfer from my xD card to PC. It's great - really fast.

There are many hard drive based media readers on the market, including the Epson model listed earlier in this thread and the SmartDisk FlashTrax (which I would already own if it had a Firewire interface). There are also portable hard drives (without displays) and CD burners that can read flash cards without a computer.
The Belkin Media Reader that Grahamp listed will read six different types of flash media cards. |

Don't forget the portable cd burners. There's even a portable dvd burner now that doesn't need hookups to the computer.

Scuds - the other option is the direct link from the camera to the iPod (ie not media reader..) from Belkin...
Belkin Digital Camera Link for iPod w/ Dock Connector
Storing digital photos is fast and easy using the Digital Camera Link for iPod. Now you can leave your PC at home and stop worrying about using up your camera's memory. With this portable innovation you'll easily transfer thousands of digital images from your camera to your iPod, and free up disk space to take more pictures. Belkin brings a new dimension to your iPod device - it's not just for tunes anymore.
Hope that helps, Graham |

Most of these devices have media readers that can handle Memory Sticks, although it's worth noting that Belkin's Media Reader is bigger than the iPod itself! Apple's upcoming Camera Connector (and the Belkin Digital Camera Link) provide a USB port so you can plug your camera directly into the iPod. |

Do any of these devices support/display RAW files ?
No use having a display which will only handle jpg as I don't take jpgs

The viewable supported files on the iPod Photo are:
photos in JPEG, BMP, GIF, TIFF, PSD (Mac only) and PNG formats.
(ie will display on the iPod screen)
The Mac iPhoto app (free on a Mac part of the iLife 05 suite that comes with the Mac) - which would be used for data store, filing, labelling and then showing out via iPhoto (ie slide show) does support RAW files.
As to whether the RAW file will transfer via the Belkin device to the iPod... I will check for you tonight (ie try it!)

Since Apple recently added very good RAW support to iPhoto, it seems likely that their Camera Connector will also support RAW. We'll know for sure in March. |

Hm - yes the CRW format of the Canon 10D has embedded jpgs, maybe the iPod will display those on its screen. I know I can view the files using Breezbrowser or other app on the pC, but its the portable device viewing of CRW's that I really need.
Thanks anyway.

Ok, I know this is an iPOD thread but I recently got hold of a 20gb Flashtrax (£230) its big and bulky but has a 3.5" screen for viewing files after downloaded from the card. 2-3 mins to dowmload a 250mg card.
The rechargeable battery only lasts about 3 hours playing mp3's so not ideal for listening to music whilst shooting. Oh, the 'blurb' says its plays avi files, but only avi files from certain cameras, I downloaded 5 series of the simpsons before I found out.

I've used my Archos to record tv programs. It even has a tivo type program to record your shows when you aren't home. Current movies in the Archos is Aliens Vs. Predator, the Grudge, and Shaun of the Dead :)

Ack! I can't imagine watching a movie on such a tiny screen. That'd be Alien Insects vs. Predator Insects, the Minor Disagreement, and Tom Thumb of the Dead. No thanks. |
