Hi,

For everybody interested, I just finnished building my own gallery on my own webserver.

So what's so great about that?

Well the webserver is a Linksys NSLU2(a littlebit bigger as a pack of cigarets, running Apache/PHP from a 1 Gb USB Stick. (but can be run on a USB HDD also)

The whole server takes about 13 watt. and the whole system cost me arround 120 Euro.

I am using Gallery as software.

I am still in the phase of testing, but Click here to test it
I made a description how to install all this on the NLSU2 and it can be found
here

What internet connection do you need/have?
02/23/2005 10:35:03 AM · #3
Well, I have Adsl 8000/1024 (so 1Mbit up)
If you have a slower upload, then the site will load slower.
As I don't expect 100's of users a day (more like 2 or 3) this would be ok even if you have a slower upload.
Just look at it this way: If you have a 64K (like isdn) upload, your page will load as fast as somebody that has a 64K download.

So the higher your upload is, the faster is your webserver.

And it's a lot of fun building and maintaining your own private server.

If you follow instructions on the howto page, nothing can (should) go wrong.
I am a linux n00b and managed to make it work (and write the how-to)
All packages are pre-configured, and if you need to edit something the how-to will tell you where.

The NLSU is running Linux internaly, and no there is no way to install Windows on it ;-)

But if you would like to use a windows PC, just install IIS and configure Gallery (how-to's on the gallery page)

My fun was to have it running on a very very very small and 100% quiet machine

I'll try to open the site up to the web this evening (European evening that is) so you can all test.
I'm testing myself, and have uploaded my Thailand family snapshots, so there's nothing interesting to see, but then you can see it running and see the performance.

OK i'm ready for testing.

Click here to visit my gallery
Keep in mind that I'm still testing and tweaking around, so if connecting doesn't work I'm probably doing something.

I think i will buy one of those!.

I bought it a week ago, and am very pleased with it.
But beware, you'll need to read a lot and try out some stuff to get it working...

excellent. loads fast even fron NYC, USA.

I programmed my own gallery in php and I run it off of this computer with Apache. Running your own server probably isn't a good idea if you expect a lot of visitors but I only use my gallery to share with friends and family so it doesn't take much bandwidth.

I noticed that the 'title' of your page (located at the top of internet explorer and in the address box) is your IP address. Does that mean people have to know your IP to get to you site? Can you change those settings as well?

No doubt! I have a DSL connection though! but I think he already said it only loads as fast as the 'server' will allow it. He's probably got a fast connection as well. It would probably suck pretty bad to run a server from a 56k internal modem :|

It show's my IP adress because I configured it like this.
I don't have a domain name linked to this ip-adress (yet) but that is easy to fix.

I'm realy amazed at this very small piece of hardware (and the price, around $80US).
It takes almost no power, so it can run night and day, makes no noise, and is very cheap.
02/23/2005 05:47:10 PM · #22
To do this you need a static IP address assigned by your ISP, correct? I don't have one of those ...
02/23/2005 06:57:02 PM · #23
A static address would work better but it's not necessary.

A friend of mine uses a company that updates the DNS records automatically as his IP address changes. Can't recall the name right now though.

I think I've heard of that, it's been posted before. Might be cheaper to get a static IP in the long run though ...

Thanks for the info -- though if I run a server, it will probably be on one one of my old (idle) machines and not a super-duper high-tech gadget.

But that's the fun part.
The whole thing will be a lesser value tha your old (idle) pc, and take up less power, make less noise.

So.... Less=More ;-)

I'm not saying that this is the best solution, but it's A solution, and it's a FUN solution.

As they say: Size matters
