Ok as most of you know I have a SB-800 speed light on the way. This will be my first ever speed light / flash unit so I would like some tips on setting it up etc with the D70.

I have read that there are a lot of settings that can be made with the SB-800 and that it retains them in memory until they are manually changed so if anyone has one I'd love to know what settings you recommend.

Thanks
Bob

I know this defies logic, but I've had my best success using full auto mode with the SB-800. Its iTTL mode is so smart that it "just works".

The other magic number is -1.7 EV. When using it for outdoor fill flash I bunch in this number, and 95% of the time it's exactly what I need. Pulled that tip out of John Shaw's Focus on Nature book, and its served me well.

Tip: If you are setting the D70 to trigger and SB-800 as a remotely (by setting the built-in flash as Commander, use Channel 3 and Group A on SB-800. It will not work otherwise!. There's only one line in the manual about this, which I initially missed.

For settings - Spend a few days experimenting.

I haven't dived into the Creative Lighting System yet... Incredibly powerful, no doubt, but definitely not for the faint of heart. So far I've been totally underutilizing the features on the SB-800. But it's power (output) is what I bought it for. I can put a nice catchlight in an animal's eye from quite a bit more distance than the on-camera unit.

Will have to take the plunge soon though as I can hardly stand the idea of not learning how to use something my gear can do :)
