I just bought a 50mm Macro lens too - for my Pentax, of course. Not much time to try it out fully yet, but here's a sample.

I find the 50mm 1.8 also indespensible for product/stock photography. The depth of field capable at closer focusing distances is incredible. An example:

Very nice!

I really like the shallow dof on all of these.

Everything I've shot lately has been with the 50mm 1.8 II.

Since I got my lens yesterday, it was appropriate that my Photo-A-Day photograph was taken with the 50mm 1.8...doesn't really show the capabilities of the lens, other than the fact that I didn't have to pull out my tripod for this shot...

02/19/2005 12:30:28 PM · #31

it didn't seem to be shallow enough to me to be at 1.8

canon 50mm f:1.8 @ f:1.8 - the BG is about 12" behind the bubble - the nails show the DOF range. although i may have been closer to the bubble than you were to the pitcher...

After you go to the Amazon page, if you click "Canon 50mm f/1.8 II Camera Lens" it will show you "more buying choices" -- included there is a listing for $74.95, which would be fulfilled by Adorama.

Of course, the $80 Amazon option is eligible for free shipping, so that's probably the better deal anyway.

-Terry

EDIT: Better yet, look here.

Ahh, okay. I see it now. I've never used Amazon before. For some reason I always use Adorama. Thanks, Terry.

I was just looking at B&H prices. The 50mm 1.8D autofocus is $89.95. I also saw that the 50mm 1.4D autofocus is $229.95! I didn't realize that the slightly faster 1.4 would be so much more expensive!!

Also, the BR2A Reversing Adaptor costs $23.95. How does that work exactly for macro photography?

Chris
ps - I'm looking at the Nikkor...sorry...I thought I was posting to the other thread about the Nikon 50mm discussion. :)

The cannon is the same way - that is why we all say the 50mm 1.8 is such a bargain!

I have not reversed the 50 to see what kind of macro results i can get...soon i will try that. I am trying too many new things lately...my brain cannot properly process it all!

Okay, you all talked me into it. I have officially purchased this lens. :-) I'll try to post some shots when I get it.

Thanks for all of the sample pics and discussions, they were very helpful in my decision.

Need some filters to go with it?

These may go cheap.

Male to Male threads... screws in the front of both of your lenses, make sure you get the right filter sizes for your lenses. I am getting a 62mm to 52mm reversing adapter from eBay for 9 bucks.

I have played with (handheld) reversing the 50mm on the end of my 28-300mm @ 300 and it is insane...At that magnification I could Handhold it steady but the closeness is unreal. Brought the 19" focal point of my tamron down to about an inch and half. I could see hairs on the end of a ball point pen with it.

Let you know how it goes once I get the adapter.

Whoops...Congrats Butteryflysis...

nsbca7...putting em on the watch list.

Thank you! I've also put your filters on my watch list, nsbca7. Thanks.

Okay, I have to tell you this....lol

I received an email from Adorama saying I needed to call. I call and get voice mail and leave a message. A few minutes later the phone rings. He says, "You knew it was me, right?"...then goes on to ask if I want a used UV filter for $9.00. I say no (after seeing the Ebay sale above) and he says, "Come on, it's like a condom. You don't want protection? You should really have one.".....

Weird. All I could do was laugh....lol

I hear this type of thing happening at most of the photodiscounters, but not adorama. could be they are slipping into the abyss too.

So, it's common? I can't imagine acting that way at work...with customers, anyway. lol Lucky for him I have a good sense of humor. Some people would turn him in.

I mean the call back to sell additional items. I was in mailorder sales for about 6 years - never called back to try and add to the order (a)no time for that and (b)seemed like something that would piss off the customer and hurt repeat sales

I ordered from adorama (heard they were relable, and they were about $5 less than b&h. They never called, but never shipped or charged antyhing for 5 days. Trying to call them got me bounced around to 4 diffent people and dumped into anonymous voice mail

called b&h. had it in 2 days.

Who do you think i am gonna call next time? that was a $925 order. Sure, blow me for for $50, but when i spend a grand i expect some attempt at customer service!

BTW, i used my 50mm 1.8 yesterday. I love that lens!

I've only used Adorama for purchases. When I wanted to buy some Eclipse BH didn't have it (said it was illegal to ship, or something like that) and so I check Adorama. They had it and I received my order in 3-4 days. I also ordered my 12-24mm there with no problems.

I agree about the call backs. I don't like that they do that. I also hate it when I walk into a store and they pounce on you with "Can I help you? What are you looking for?" ....just leave me alone. :-)

That's a great looking shot there. I can't wait to get mine and play!
