Any thoughts?

Cute! Looks like the focus might be a bit in front of the eyes, on the beak. Nice shot with an interesting angle.

Thanks Jen. I gotta say ... I give credit to anyone who has shot a bird flying. This is as good as I could get...

although I definately plan on trying again...maybe with better lighting.

You're welcome. Hey, this is pretty good! I love the wing action. I've never been successful either. I would love to know how some of these people get their flying bird shots, especially when the head is in complete focus and the bg is blurred. Must be luck? lol Nice job with this one.

I don't know either, but I plan to find out through practice.

This guy was scared of me...although he was the only one with that purple stripe on his wings.

and the goose just watched as all the ducks flew off in fear.

I've tried numerous times to get birds in flight, but they never come out any good. I'm glad to see that it is not just me. Not that your picture isn't any good, but that you said it's very difficult to get a great shot of a bird in flight. And it is.

Thanks Sue and Mark.

Sue, yes, I definately find them interesting -- moreso than I had every known before today. I've always known that area existed, but never really paid much attention to it. I plan to go back.

Mark...I never realized how difficult it was until today. I give all those bird in flight shots so much credit. I got another, but it's hardly worth posting as the sky is blown and the bird is a shadow heh.

David - your goose has a face only a mother can luv!

As for taking birds in flight you have to spend lots of time at it and get lucky on background and the like. I took this while trying to get a look at the fishing line wrapped around his legs. I blew up the legs and sent it on to some bird people here to see if they can help him out. Anyway, this is how most of mine come out. Only part of the bird in the frame. I'm always to slow to pull back the zoom when they take off.

edit: I guess I should clarify that when I say "most of mine" I mean of the few that come out in focus and properly exposed!

Thanks, JB...yeah, it is one ugly face although beautiful at the same time. Oh..and that's a shame about that fishing line on that eagle's feet...people should clean up their garbage.

Check out this pbase gallery of photos by a friend of mine - Stephen Lau. Lots of flying bird shots from the Bosque del Apache bird refuge in New Mexico.
