Howdy y'all . How are we all looking for sunday's adventure. Is it still raining? It poured up here (SF Bay Area) but now it is absouletly beautiful. Doubters beware I'm part Indian(no harm intended) and gosh dang it my rain song really does work? (Excuse my behavior I'm a little neurotic as well).

Hi friends,

In our last thread we all decided to go out for night shooting in February in Hollywood. I wanted to post some info about this meet-up:

Date: 2/20/05 Sunday (Holiday Weekend with Monday off work for most)

Time: 3:00 PM
Location 1: Glendale (PM me for address & directions to my place). We will carpool to Hollywood to save money on parking.

Time 3:30 PM
Location 2: 5 Star Parking at 1718 N Cherokee Avenue, Hollywood (pretty cheap)!
Just North of Hollywood Blvd on Cherokee (323) 957-9211
Map: //www.mapquest.com/maps/map.adp?formtype=address&searchtype=address&country=US&addtohistory=&address=1718+N+Cherokee+Avenue&city=HOllywood&state=ca&zipcode=

We'll walk up Hollywood, getting photos at the Mann's Theater & surrounding areas, stay there through 5:30 PM or so til the sun is down and we can get some lights!

We'll then have some dinner, then head over to Sunset Strip for some more night photography. We can carpool from Cherokee, leaving most of our cars in this garage because it's very inexpensive!

We'll end the night after we are all tired.
If anyone who wants to carpool has any 'end time' requirements, let us know by posting here.

Since it's a holiday weekend, many people will be out doing touristy things on Sunday, so we should be able to capture some human activity!!!

Think we agreed on this, IF it doesn't rain. If it does we must cancel :( from my understanding.

Now everyone cheer Donald on with his rain song and dance!!

Well folks,
I just looked up Hollywood on the weather service, and for Hollywood, they are predicting about 50% chance of rain during the day and about 80% chance of rain during the evening.

I guess we have three options, risk the rain, reschedule, or switch to an indoor venue on Sunday.

Any idea???

I got a buddy down there now and he just gave me a call and told me the La basin has flash flood warning's. If that's the case and it does not clear up by sunday are we all going to still meet up and maybe do some indoor shooting somewhere. Rain does not phase me I think you can capture some really cool images in inclimate weather, but thats just my comfort zone. Someone post or pm me with the final decesion on the meet I'm leaving around 7'o-clock pm to make the drive down today. Even if we do not meet I promised my folks I was going to visit them in Lancaster. Talk to you guys later.

I'd still like to meet on Sunday and shoot.
As I type now, this is the official forecast for West Hollywood...

Tomorrow: Overcast with showers at times. High 62F. Winds S at 5 to 10 mph. Chance of rain 50%.

Tomorrow night: Rain showers in the evening becoming steady overnight. Low around 55F. Winds SE at 5 to 10 mph. Chance of rain 80%.

Things are not looking best, especially for night shooting.
I don't mind the rain, but I'm just worried about getting my gear wet. Electronics and water... BAD..

I think the driving around is not too bad except for some isolated spots that are flooded. La Brea Tar Pits "Page Museum" has some nice fossils (Indoors) and the Peterson Auto Museum across the street might be nice (Indoors), but we'd have to pay admissions. We can even stop by the Farmers Market/The Grove, although it is outdoors. I'm also open to any other suggestions as well.

I'm also open to meet at Hollywood and shoot if it's not raining or all driving to an indoor spot.

well if tomorrow turns out today and the rain passes through over night we'll be fine :).

Just wondering if anyone was up last night taking pictures of the lighting strikes. I would of but was feeling under the weather *no pun intended*.

Well hopefully I get to see you guys/gal tomorrow
02/19/2005 07:13:02 PM · #59
Well, I just checked the weather site again. No change in chance of rain. 60%/80% druing day/night. I don't have any rain gear and am worried about getting my equipment wet.

Hey Tom pm me with your cell#, I'll call you when I get into lancaster tomorrow . I'm still up for a meet rain/shine - indoors/outdoors. I have my folks that live in lancaster so I will be making the trip anyway.

Hi Everyone,

Ok, I've been keeping an eye on the weather and I was just on Sunset Strip at the House of Blues tonight. It was storming bad!!! Pot holes, water and rain everywhere! I don't think it will be good for our equipment to be out there tomorrow. Now, for me, I am only free after 3pm, so going to the tarpits doesn't work for me (or the grove for that matter). If you all want to go, perhaps you could pick a place to meet up in Hollywood.

I would very much like to do a raincheck though for next Saturday night if you are all free! I know DDYJR will probably not be down here, sadly, but I don't think I want to take my 20D out in this weather. I can't really think of a great indoor place to do photography at night. I was really hoping to get a great shoot in Hollywood tomorrow. I am really bummed about it :(

Anyhow, how's next Saturday (Feb 26th) work to try this again? Same place same time???

Unfortunately I'll be out of town in Florida until the following Sunday, I think. I'm with Arie and thinking those percentages are not looking good. If we had a nice indoors venue I'd probably go but if it's all outdoors, I'll pass. Chances are 100%, if I do not go, weather will be perfect for night photography. :(

I'm a sucker for punishment and adventure. I'm still rolling into hollywood later today. Tom I'll give you a call to see if your interested in hooking up or anybody who would be interested in just hanging out tonight in hollywood can call me at 1-661-948-7708. I'll be at this number up thru monday.
02/20/2005 11:48:34 AM · #64
Well, with continued chance of rain, especially heavy at night. I too will have to take a rain check (Sorry Donald). I'm out of town next week, so Saturday will be bad for me. Sunday afternoon would work.

02/20/2005 12:40:44 PM · #65
With it raining and stoping for the past two hours i'm going to also take a rain check.

02/20/2005 01:15:09 PM · #66
Greg, I am sorry you won't be here next week. That really sucks that today turned out so badly. I was really looking forward to it.

If Sunday afternoon works for you, Tom, we could go! Is anyone else interested in Sunday afternoon next weekend?

Sunday is good for me.

02/20/2005 01:41:22 PM · #68
Great, Sunday it is! If anyone else can join us!!! Same plan, Sunday next week. NO RAIN, ok!! ;)
02/20/2005 03:38:59 PM · #69
Next sunday also works for me, as long as it doesn't rain.
02/20/2005 07:43:31 PM · #70
Man, Just got back from the shoot in Miami, and what is all this rain? Wow...

I have two weddings next weekend so I am afraid I would not be able to make it. BTW, Arie, how'd your wedding go in FL - never heard about it???

Well, I travelled light with just my Rebel, grip, flash, and 28-135 IS to Peterson's Auto Museum. There wasn't that much to photograph, maybe 2 hours worth, but what a lesson in lighting. The museum is so differently lit, I was constantly changing my FEC, EV, and the ISO. They don't allow tripods, so all were hand held shooting. Not bad, but I'll wait till next Sunday for HOLLYWOOD. Hope all can make it.

Next weekend is the Oscars! I don't know how close we'll get to the Kodak or the Mann's, but we can try! :) I am certainly up for it, but parking is NOT going to be easy or cheap!!! It may be fun to be down there next weekend though, but we have to prepare for traffic and be patient!

John, my wedding photos came out nice. I wish I didn't have to PS them so much, but here they are:

Hey Arie; I think you did very well... As you know weddings can be a pretty tough genre' - large or the more intimate. Keep up the fab effort and the PSing will get less and less over time. We all still do it to some degree no matter what, albeit in the real darkroom or in PS, so dont measure your efforts on that one....

Good Job,

John

If the Oscars are on Sunday, we might as well forget it. We won't be able to get near the Kodak Theather/Mann's Chinese Theather b/c it's fenced off. I think they control the street traffic as well so the limo's with the stars can drive unindered by traffic. If we camp overnight we can get seats in the stand as the stars walk by...
How about if we just do some go to Sunset Blvd to catch the sunset and night photography?

Good idea...
