I have had my Rebel for a bit over a month. Went over to a friends yesterday and he and his cohorts shoot almost exclusively in RAW.
I shot some in RAW and can see the benefit to WB and exposure correction after the fact, vs JPG files. The downside (besides file size) is the way i have to do the correction..
I have PS 7 (it does not read RAW files).
I have the Canon software, it is SLOW.
I have a demo of Bibble Labs PS plug in - no WB correction from what I can see.
I hear there was a RAW plug in from Adobe for 7.0? It vanished after CS was released...true or not?
Besides PS CS, any other (cheap) options?
Of the available options, what is the best?

Is the Canon software you have tried and found to be slow Digital Photo Professional 1.5 or something else?
If DPP 1.5 did not ship with the Rebel, it is available on Canon's web site as a free download in the software section for the 300D. It is worth looking at; it definitely has a lot of power and I did not find it to be slow, although I have not used it extensively.
You could also check this tutorial on the software; it looked pretty good: //www.photoworkshop.com/canon/dpp/ |

At canon website, they only have the updater. so I think you would need to have a previous copy of DPP. |

Well, it is on the Digital Rebel download page, so I would assume it is available to Rebel users to use. Worth downloading and looking at anyway. |

I use C1 LE from Phase One.
It's fast and has a nice interface, does noise reduction & sharpening as well as exposure/Wb adjustments will export jpeg or tiff.
Free 30 day trial, so you have no excuse not to try it.

Don't let the title fool you gaurawa. It's actual software, not just an update. I have just installed it and it runs as its own program. I have no idea why canon went and called it an "update". It's just confusing.

I am using the Zoombrowser EX that came with the Rebel. I have tried the Bibblelabs app - alone it seems ok, the plug in is disappointing.
I see the DPP updater..what page did you find DPP at?

I like capture one, works very well, better than breeze or cs for converting. I understand Bibble rocks for Nikon files, but not as good as C1 for CRWs. |

I just downloaded it and looks like it works for 10D without a problem. |

Yep the 'update' gives you the app.
I updates all my canon software - beware if you are on dialup - the viewer update (ver 5.00)is some 37Mb, and DPP isclose behind it.
Now to go play...

Not true. Bibble has WB correction.
Tools --> Advanced --> White Balance
Bibble has pretty much every feature you can think of, as does C1. I can vouch for it rocking on Nikon files, but I've never heard about it being any less desireable on CRW files.
If you are evealuating it, make use of their web forum for help. Searching through the past few months of posts is just about the best way to learn Bibble and discover things you didn't know it could do.

I found the WB in Bibble in the plug in.
Using DPP now - free and I like the interface, and it should do the best on Canon RAW as it is Canon software!
A shot from yesterday - you can see the two stobes reflected in his eye. Non cooperative kid(s) and my first time (in a studio, shooting in RAW) and we wre freezing - the stuido (to be) is in a house that is being remodeled - no heat, and it was 18 degrees outside!
was majorly fixed exposure wise (F8 when F11 is correct-can't rely on flash meters!) and the backdrop was droppin in in PS.
This is the one i meant to referance - no adjustment, just slight USM

You should be able to download the Camera Raw plugin for Photoshop directly from Adobe. I believe it is free.

You are correct... the CameraRaw version 2.1 was a $99 add-on to Photoshop 7 when it was available.
First, try the Canon software that shipped with your camera.
If that does not meet your needs, I would suggest trying out the 30-day free trial of CaptureOne LE Should you decide to purchase it, the software is $99.00.
Your next-best option would probably be to upgrade to Photoshop CS for $161.49.

If my upgrade cast was only $160, i would. But the best i can to is abuot $260. Some silly rule about proper ownership and stuff. I can get the academic version for the $260.
What shipped with my camera works, but is slow. I DL'd Digital Photo Professional from canon's site for free. works great, although not a plug in. It is a great viewer, as in speed and what i see on my screen. I have not been real happy with any viewer so far and i have tried many. It will show the RAW and jpg and tif files, so it wins hands down for all that.

I downloaded it but it says you need to have all the other Canon crud running to install it. Is that true. I don't have any of that installed on my main machine because I have other software that serves those functions better. But I wouldn't mind trying DPP, if I didn't have to install 4 other packages to do it! |

I was none to happy with all the other tings that installed - I wanted three things...the viewer ver 5.0 and that seemed to cause all the ruckus, install wise, and a requested reboot too! for DPP it wanted RAW 1.2 or some such.
Check all that crap out - and on the non-fly out part is canon photorecord, whatever that is.
I don't need all of that - i never hook the cam to the USB port anyway, and most of the rest of it - I have no clue what it is or does, nor do i really care. perhaps if it can make a VCD slideshow with music...
